Oil sight gauge replacement

I am unable to see thru the engine oil level sight gauge on my '05 LT. Drained the old oil, replaced same with less than required amount of oil so I could see the level go up as I filled to the required amount. No deal, the gauge is so dark I could not see a thing.

Bike has 61,000 miles

1. Is it possible to clean the sight gauge?

if not,

2. What is the procedure for replacing the sight gauge? Does is break the integrity of the factory installation? I have no leaks and want to keep it that way.
