Swirl marks on my wind screen

On my 99KLT the wind shield has swirl marks that I can't get rid of. I bought the bike about 2weeks ago and have no idea what the last owner used to clean it. Is there a way to polish the glass (I understand it's not glass). I have read on here about using mild soap and soft cloth but the marks are still there.

Re: Swirl marks on my wind screen

Give iso-propyl alcohol a try. There's a coating on the plexiglass shield. If that fails try Plexis. It's a plastic cleaner that I've found in most MC shops. If that fails, try a V-Stream shield. I am really impressed with its clarity.

Don't try just use furniture polish from Jonson, Dust & Clean in the blue spray bottle.

Re: Swirl marks on my wind screen

I have the ZTechnik V-Stream and really like it. I've had the '99 for just a little over a year now and one of the perks of the purchase was that the dealer in Tallahassee knew and let me know that the OEM windshield was bad on the LT. Then they agreed to purchase a new V-Stream and throw that in the price I offered. So it was a FreeB for me so of course I like it. That gave me $250 that I could spend on other things to hang on the bike.

I don't notice the noise that some talk about as we wear the correct sized helmets that fit snug as they should. I would venture to say that 75% of riders wear too large a helmet and that lets in wind and wind is noise. And a sloppy helmet fit is way less protection if you go down. Just my .02¢... your mileage may vary.

Re: Swirl marks on my wind screen

I think the problem with the plastic windshields is that once you scratch them, there is no way to unscratch them. Like unringing the bell. It can't be done.
You just have to get a new bike.
Oh, you just got this bike?
Well, the easiest would be a new windshield.
The other thing would be an extreme amount of polishing, maybe with some compound and a buffer machine.
And even that might not work.

Its my understanding it will. If you want make a call to the parts counter at your local BMW dealer and ask them, just to be sure.

Re: Swirl marks on my wind screen

CeeBailey's sels a restore kit that works MAGIC (the polish is the only thing I've used, if you call them they might sell you just that). I've taken swirl marks out of my windshield, even a long, deep scratch from a tipover, and it works great on surface/clear coat scratches on your paint or on the car.

Re: Swirl marks on my wind screen

Cee Baileys windshields are a different material from BMWs. Scratch removers etc. will not work on OEM windshields as they have a factory coating on them which is similar to tempering on glass. Cee Baileys and other aftermarket units which are 1/4" thick can be polished out as they are not coated.

Re: Swirl marks on my wind screen

Paul sent you another PM. My checking revealed that the front windshield between 99-09 have the same part numbers...

Always good to recycle when you can. Remember the iso-propyl alcohol trick. I remember having to use it every few days on the stock shield.

Have fun,
Jer
