No Final Drive Failure?

Okay, I read about a lot of FD failures. Is this inevitable? How many of you have not had a FD failure and how many miles do you have on your bike?

I'll start.

No FD failure, 20,400 miles (knocking on wood with one hand as I type with the other).

If have almost 54,000 miles on my 2003 with no drive problems, or if I do have them I am just too wrapped up in myself to notice them.

Re: No Final Drive Failure?

I traded my '02 LT in last week and the clocked turned 56,000 as I drove in.
The dealer rented my old bike out to a group of folks from Russia, they made it to Yosemite and the final drive crapped out... is that Karma or what.

Dealer told me it was an easy fix. The drive wasn't destroyed.

Re: No Final Drive Failure?

Pat, I think your question and statement needs some clarification. And so do some of the answers...

See my answer goes as follows:

- currently 04 (05 US) LT 136.000 km / 85.000 miles, no final drive failures.
- first FD bearing changed at 60.000 km/ 38.000 miles as pre-emptive service
- installed a new final drive at 100.000 km / 60.000 miles. This was off of a triked -07 with only 9 miles one it. Pre-emptive service again.
- the old FD got a new bearing per video instructions by Curtis (aka Charlie VT) so that sits now as a spare in my garage and will be changed again at 150 - 160.000 km regardless of the condition of the existing one.
- and the -07 FD will get a new bearing and so on...

So...I have had no FD failures.

Perhaps you should have asked:

"How many of you are still riding with your original FD bearing and how many miles you have on your bike."

There have been at least 100 threads since about 2002 with thousand of views and responses regarding this same topic.

There is also a final drive failure registry with over 22,000 views which attempts to document this:

The consensus is that 96% of owners have had NO problems.

With my '05 I did a preventive rebuild at 36,000 and probably wasted my money. Then rode her 44,000 with no problem. My '08 has 54,000 trouble free miles and hardly any mud in the RD oil.

Yeah, Dave, but you've only put, what, 110,000 miles on that LT in about 3 years? How about putting some miles on it, then get back to us!

The 2000 I had that Dave now has is at 55,000 miles with no failure. The 2005 I have now had a failure with the previous owner at 12,600 miles. Dave checked the preload, found it to be shimmed too heavily, fixed it, and put it back together at 13,000 miles. Now at 25,000 miles, he checked it a few weeks ago, and all was well inside. Thanks, Dave!

Dave, did you ever check the 2000? I can't remember.

Re: No Final Drive Failure?

The people who you are asking about FD failures do not include those that sold their LTs.

If you scan posts by CharlieVT you'll get measurements he makes.

Note how many times the FDs he gets have incorrect shimming.

He recently took my FD apart, 28K on it, and found traces that the bearing race had uneven ware. Plus, when he took it apart and measured the shims they were thicker than any he has used on a FD rebuild.

Even though it may not be likely that your FD goes, consider having a plan B if you roam far from home.

Some people carry a replacement bearing that can be installed so that they can ride home and then have the FD properly rebuilt.

My plan B for my ride home from ME to Tucson was to have a FD that was properly rebuilt installed. I figure it was a lot cheaper than having to deal with an FD failure en-route.

Re: No Final Drive Failure?

2006 and 13000 miles and no FD failure. Just like a timex...takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. Mind you I had to fix a broken rear view mirror mount and the top case mirror hinges, but these are minor fixes anyhow!!
cheers,
Jim
