Question Brake line leak

I have a 2001 K1200 LT with ABS (purchased about 2 months ago) I am familiar with older sport bikes and dirt bikes none of the brake systems were anywhere close to being this complicated. My front brake lever started feeling spongy, when I got home my reservoir on the bar was low, no fluid at the calipers but looking up under the fairing there is a block?? With brake lines connected to it one line is leaking. My questions are

Loosing level out of the reservoir at the bar I assume this is the line leaking and I believe this line is just a signal line for the front brake system??? Is the line from the front brake lever a high pressure line applying pressure to the calipers or does the pressure come from the ABS unit itself?

Does my bike have power brakes? I did not get an owners manual from the previous owner and I will buy a Clymer manual ASAP

Before I start my first Tupperware party I have searched this site for Tupperware removal info and found it but have not found info on the line from the handle bar to the block?? I have found lots of brake line leak and bleeding info, so much on break lines I am wondering if I should replace them all or just have NAPA make me a new one.

If one leaking, replace all at this age.

Re: Brake line leak

If your calipers have "Brembo" on them then you have an early 2001 with ABS II. If they say "BMW" on them you have a later 2001 with the Integral I-ABS.

I suspect you have the ABS II if your handle bar reservoir went down. But you have more hoses leaking if you have the I-ABS and the fluid went down.

Re: Brake line leak

Thanks for the response, I think I will replace all of the hoses, I have read on other post about a kit that is available. Any suggestions on brake line replacement kits? I would rather replace them all together instead of one at a time. I am not at home so I will check to see if I have BMW or Brembo calipers. Thanks for the Tupperware pictures, I am sure I can get the plastic off just not as sure about getting everything back togetherů.

Re: Brake line leak

Thanks, I just checked them out and there is a dealer by my house. I am going with the clear line and titanium fittings. 234.00 for 6 steel braided lines... not tooo bad.

Re: Brake line leak

Maybe you don't need to replace all the lines.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on a recent trip. Pretty scary when you are 1200 miles from home and your front brake handle pulls all the way to the throttle with no pressure.

It turned out to be the crush washer on the right angle fitting just to the outside of the ABS unit. The washer had developed a hairline crack. Just enough brake fluid had leaked out to lose all pressure in the line.

You have to remove a lot of the covers to get to the fitting. Remove the line that goes from the fitting to the ABS unit and then replace the washer. I got a kit of brake line crush washers from the auto parts store for $3. You will only need to bleed the front hand lever brake line after you replace the washer.

Good luck.
