Dealer just reset ABS, whirring when ignition off

Just got my 99 K1200LT home from the dealer's 72000 mile service. I've had the ABS wig wag lights since I bought it. Dealer today did a "manual" reset since their computers don't have the software for the 99... Or something like that. ABS lights were off as if all was normal until about 30 minutes after leaving the dealer. Stopped at a four way, then noticed the old familiar wig wag lights back. I thought, "oh well, I guess not my day."

When I got home, another 30 minutes later, when I turned the bike off, there was a strange whirring motor sound. I had to disconnect the battery ground to get it to stop. At first I thought it might have been the cooling fans, but the temp gauge was no where near high enough to kick those on and once I dismounted and raised the seat to disconnect the battery, I could tell the sound was coming from under the seat.

Is this a return to the dealer for further service thing, or something I can disconnect and be done with it?

Thanks.

Sounds like a stuck ABS relay. Yes you can disconnect it. It is located under the black cover on the side of the ABS unit. This will not affect normal brake performance but you will no longer have ABS capability.

Re: Dealer just reset ABS, whirring when ignition off

I actually bought the bike in January with the wig wagging lights from this same dealer. So I've never had functioning ABS. No one can tell me if it's a simple=cheap problem or a complex=expensive one.

I figure it's not that big a deal...of course I'll never need it until I actually need it...I get that. But I can't afford to replace it.

Any way to cut off the wig wagging lights other than fix the ABS itself?

You should be able to just unplug the unit. The brake lights do not go through it just the fluid.

No one can tell me if it's a simple=cheap problem or a complex=expensive one. If the ABS module needs replaced then it will be expensive! Do a forum search on the words 'ABS spring' and you will find posts where individuals have taken apart the ABS unit. Results have mot been good long term.

I figure it's not that big a deal...of course I'll never need it until I actually need it...I get that. But I can't afford to replace it. You just answered your own question. If this is not your first motorcycle then you have ridden without it. The good news is that you still have full braking function because of the year of the bike.

Any way to cut off the wig wagging lights other than fix the ABS itself? You betcha! Nothing to it. You will need to gain access to the area behind the dash. You will need to remove the windscreen and the curved piece between the windshield and the dash. Look up the procedure in your Clymers Manual and you will have no problems. Pull out the bulbs for the ABS wig waggers and put it back together. The lights will bother you no more. Until you can do this a nice piece of black electrical tape judiciously applied to the dash above the lights will give you relief.

Edit: Or you can unplug the ABS unit as John Z recommends and see if the lights go out.

Let me be blunt... Don't be a dumb ass and fix it. The ABS will save your life.
I dump around 3k in mine and it saved me and my wife after some moron pulled out in front of us and stopped.

Agree!

Fix it right.

The dealer needs to at least help you out with this. Selling a bike with warning lights flashing, brake warning lights flashing is just wrong. Speak to them and if you don't get satisfaction, seek some legal assistance. A dealer knows better, that's almost criminal to sell a bike in that condition. Now if they sold it to you "as is" with a written something about brakes may not be fully functional, thats another matter.

I've not been in a situation where I needed my anti lock but by golly I expect it to be working should I need it.

True but there is a big difference in your ABS and his. Yours is useless when bad since it is power assisted. He still has the full braking capability. ABS does not stop you faster but it does prevent you from locking up a wheel in slippery situations.

JZ...having a difficult time getting the unit disconnected. There is a sort of L- shaped design to it, no where to really grab it. I took the one visible screw out (what would be the top) but cannot seem to get the bracket off the ABS Relay unit. You do not just unplug the mass of cabling connecting to the L-bracket from the bottom...correct? I'm just having a difficult time getting my hand in there to do anything. I'm guessing there's something on the bottom still holding it on but can't get to it. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Re: Dealer just reset ABS, whirring when ignition off

I have not seen your style recently but the later model ABS unit have a "slot" at the end of the connector that slides out then it acts like a cam action to lift the connector off. May be the same on your unit.
