Newbie....

Hi there. Been lurking for about a year, and now officially wanted to say hi, as I just bought an '05 last week, got it registered today - my first BMW motorcycle. I have a few things that need doing - oil change, rear drive oil check and change (and may even send it off for shimming right as an insurance policy), wire up a starcom1 that I have, and replace my shorty windshield (bike came with it - guy was shorter than me) with something taller (suggestions?).

I can tell you all about Honda VTX1800's (!) as I have one - it's a cool ride and a buddy on this forum calls it "as close as you can make a VTX1800 into a K1200LT" - but now start the journey of learning about the real K1200LT and making it my own.

Looking forward to getting into it!

Re: Newbie....

Congrats on the new ride.

No need to have the drive re-shimmed as the 05 and up have only had issues with the smaller taper bearing (and very rare as well). You can do that check on the bike with no special tools.

Re: Newbie....

Thx - much appreciated. I have one other question - the chrome strips on my side bags are scratched from being down - has anyone got a kit for replacing them with LEDs inside rubber to increase visibility? I've hunted everywhere I can think of but being new to the bike not sure where to look. Thanks for any help that anyone can offer.

Welcome aboard and congrats on your new ride. Aside from the dealer, you might check Ebay, I have seen side cases and chrome bits listed.

Re: Newbie....

I know i have heard about a cover that goes over the "chrome" trim. try searching the forums here. I too am thinking about installing LED's on these pieces. I think it would look great.

Re: Newbie....

Welcome aboard...you started much like myself and I have developed quite a love for my LT. I will never go back to a V twin again. Search the search function for information-I know that some fellows have put LEDs and have modified their chrome strips. I should warn you...though it probably will do no good...but there is a disease that effects BMW owners. The symptoms are spending money to add accessories for your ride...farkle-itis is its name and another side effect is it causes your spouse or S.O. much grief...which in turns causes you grief.

Enjoy your new bike...she is a blast.

Wade

Wink Re: Newbie....

The LED's you may have seen in the chrome strips are an aftermarket product that one of our members started long ago. They can still be gotten, but I am not sure which is the best source.
On the rubber for the chrome strips however, you can't go wrong with BMR's protection strips! I have had a set on my '00 LT for about a decade now and they have more than payed for their cost. Here is the link to the product:

Welcome to the group!

Re: Newbie....

I have a V-Stream for the LT. I didn't like it, too tall and wide for me. But then, I ran a shorty windscreen on my LT too. It's new, only been on the bike for a single trip TN, to Key West and back. PM me if you're interested.
