Collision, Luck On My Side

Had the misfortune and was involved in an accident earlier this week. The insurance (Progressive) just informed me that the LT was a total loss.

To make a long story short, I was traveling in the left lane of a four lane freeway. Traffic ahead of me began stopping and stopped. I stopped directly behind (left rear side) an F-350 p/u truck. Then I noticed a Chev Silverado p/u rapidly approaching my rear, before I could get the LT moved I was struck in the rear by the Chevy at 35-40 mph. I think he applied his brakes just prior to impact. That pushed me to the left and into the rear of the F-350, ejecting me off the LT. The LT continued sideswiping the concrete divider wall and ultimately passing the Ford hitting another vehicle that was stopped in front of the Ford.

I managed to get banged up only, abrasions, lacerations to my lower legs. I twisted my left knee somehow so right now that’s the worst of my injuries.

Oh in case the question comes up yes I did have all my riding gear on (pants, jacket, helmet, gloves) which by the way held up wonderful and did perform as intended.

I am in the process of looking for another LT and hopefully I will have one all lined up in the next few days…

Got a bunch of pics of the scene, I will see if I can get them posted..

Glad you're OK, you can replace the bike! ATGATT works again. Stay safe.

Are you going to try and strip all your farkles off?

I couldn't help myself...... It's such a beautiful color! I like the grey color of my new one, wife says that it matches my hair, but would have ordered it in the red or green if available... I really like the red K1600GT. Same color of my first Honda 350.

You sir, are lucky beyond description. I tend to stay to the side when I have to stop quickly in traffic hoping that if someone ever hits me I can clear the vehicle in front of me and walk away like you did. Good job.

Glad you walked away from that one. And thank Goodness for being able to split lane in CA or you would have been stuck between the bumpers of both truck!
I have a spare flip-up helmet and riding jacket, should you need temporary gear until you replace yours. Just PM me.

Glad you are OK Bill, that LT sure is a mess, I can easily see why Progressive totalled it. That colour was beautiful.

Wink Re: Collision, Luck On My Side

Bill. glad to see you made it through the accident OK, Tks to ATGATT! It really is a shame to see the LT totaled, but it sounds like Progressive is doing a good job there. On the subject of the totaled Bike, have you thought about a buy back for parts? There can be a lot of money there. Not to mention the luxury of having spare LT parts whenever you may need them!

Think about seeing your Dr. if you have not already done so. Those pains do have a way of springing up later. Plus you want to make sure there really is nothing serious wrong.

Re: Collision, Luck On My Side

Yes I have been keeping up by seeing the Doctors. I have an appmt with a specialist this week to check my knee out. Progressive took the LT today, to tell you the truth there wasn't really anything to speak of that wasn't gouged, scraped, broke, ripped. Every piece of plastic was damaged. The only painted body part that had no damage was the front fender. I didn't have the room to keep a wrecked m/c anyway. After I went over to the tow yard and cleaned out my bags, I really couldn't believe how banged up everything was. Even the entire fairing was twisted and bent.

Re: Collision, Luck On My Side

Bill let me put it this way the GUY upstairs is really looking out for you. You are truly blessed. Up, walking and riding is the best news.
I am not in a habit of lane splitting but I tend to setup as my way out. I have a couple habits if I see traffic coming to an abrupt stop I really show my tail with a wash out (going from side to side in my own lane) like on the railroad to get the operator's attention TO STOP also on and off the tail brake light. The '09 has a high brake light in the trunk rack. Then again if the driver behind you is driving blindly or not paying attention everything is left up to you and I think you did the right thing.
ride safe

Re: Collision, Luck On My Side

Teenagers rapidly approching in my lane going down hill blind sharp left corner for me im going up hill at a healthy clip, countersteered to avoid impact approching the ditch at 50 deg hit sand, thats were it got ugly, stood the bike up to ride the ditch and the ol Lt started to whip left/right and took off with out me BAD LT, I slid on my hip as I watched the headlite and bike flip over the other side landing in the center of the road, I was sliding towards the bike from a low side and lifted my head and the force brought me to my feet standing upright, Not a soal in sit, I ran over and pick up the beast like it weighed 300 LBS, started it and rode to the dealer with a crack in the valve cover they said there was no oil in the engine when they attempted to move it the next day, bike is toast...matthew

Re: Collision, Luck On My Side

Glad to hear you were able to walk away from this........I'm sure you know the chances of that ......even with proper positioning and defensive actions.

I have a back-off programmable brakelight controller on my concours and will also install same on my LT. It is very effective in gaining driver inattention( that is if they look up from texting soon enough ) It flashes brake light and 4ways alternately 2 times before all lights staying on while brake is applied (unless signal light is on which cancels 4way)

I was rearended on a GS850 Many years ago while stoppted at traffic light. I actually watched the front tire of the car lock in my rearview mirrors and was (fortunately) able to accellerate through the RED light before impact greatly reducing impact.

Needlessly to say I have been VERY aware of whats behind me at all times but especially when stopping.

Hope you have no lasting effects, and congrats on new-er LT

Bill,
If you are flying out to Indiana to get your new LT and if not too far away from me, I would be happy to help you get to the bike from the airport. It might make the initial visit easier than a rental car, I can't promise until you know when and where you take delivery. Three of us are taking a long way around trip through Canada on the way to CCR this year and I believe we are leaving Indiana around the 20th of this month. In any case.. let me know.

Thanks Bill for the offer, but I am having the LT shipped from the Indianapolis dealer to my house. Shipping Co. says they will p/u the LTon the 9th, 10th or 11th they will have a better idea of the date as it gets closer. Right now I am in no condition to ride, and probably won't be for several more weeks..
Thanks again for your gracious offer.

Those trucks looked roughed up too...especially the one that tried to hug your bike. Never a better example of why ATGATT than something like this. Glad you're still with us, and probably loving the '09.

Hi Bill,
Stumbled upon your posting and pics. Yes, you're lucky. No doubt about it. I was wondering since I'm a gear fanatic, if you could tell us about your gear? I'd like to know what brand of gear, what worked and what didn't. And, what caused you to have lower leg lacerations.

If you had to replace gear, what did you replace it with? I've always wondered about gear that has armor but seems to have a "relaxed fit" In other words, did the armor stay in place to protect or did it roll away and cause your skin to be exposed?

Last but not least, did you take pics of your gear and if so, would you post some of those?

My riding gear: Jacket was a Hi Viz Firstgear Killmanjaro jacket, my pants were BMW goretex over pants. Had armor in shoulder, elbows, spine, and the pants had armor in the knees. The jacket sustained a small hole just beneath the right elbow missing the armor. My right leg sustained a puncture from I think part of the body on the Ford that pealed away. It never put a slice in the goretex, but did manage to put to small holes in the liner. I was partially ejected upon the initial impact, got hung up on the LT then somehow broke free and was on the pavement for a short period of time. I have know idea what caused my left knee and lower left leg injuries. There was a perfect boot imprint on the left rear side fender of the Ford just ahead of the left rear wheel. That would explain why my right ankle hurt like hell.

Analysis of the riding gear: It worked very well, I think that the right elbow armor did roll in a counter clockwise direction on my right arm exposing my elbow. The pants worked perfect. I have not replaced either pieces yet. Arai (Signet GTR) full face helmet held up well, the face shield was located inside the cargo bed area of the Ford. The helmet sustained a small crack in the plastic vent covers on the top . I did replace the helmet with another Arai Profile.

Thanks Raffy, great hearing from you. I already bought one from a member here who was selling his from Lafayette, Indiana. Was a 2009 with 7000 miles on a 1-10 scale it was a 10.
Had it shipped out on and it arrived around the 13th.
I am healing, very slow process i must add.

Thanks Bill,

I see from your avatar and list of bikes, you are current or retired CHP? Being a motor officer myself for 6 years and rode the BMWs and HDs we're both lucky to have never crashed wearing that ridiculous horse riding apparel. I managed to get my department to get us full face helmets, Aerostich Police Roadcrafters, boots for motorcycling, and Olympia Motosport (vented) gear for the summer months. All the officers liked it but three years later our new chief rolled in and said he didn't like the way "we looked". Made us all go back to short sleeved shirts, stupid horse riding pants and boots, and half shell helmets.

Yes, he is a complete idiot...

Re: Collision, Luck On My Side

Don't you guys have a union to go to bat for you in situations like this? This is an issue that is potentially life threatening for you.

How is this any different than requiring the SWAT team to wear only Levi's and polo shirts instead of that ridiculous looking kevlar armor stuff? Everybody likes the relaxed look of Levis and polo shirts a lot more than all that scary stuff!

It shouldn't be too hard to find supporting data to reinstate adequate safety gear.

BTW how can ANYONE like the looks of the horsey stuff on a rider over professionally tailored and appropriate safety gear? Bloused pants, tall boots? This stuff reminds me of George Patton.

Hi Loren,

Don't care for unions in this part of the world but we do have some voice and representation in other venues. The problem is, the city manager hired the chief because they were buddies when they both worked in Washington. He has the whole city council thinking he's the best thing since sliced bread. Rumor has it when the DNC has come and gone, he'll be retiring and getting out of here. It won't be a moment too soon for the officers that have to work for him.

To tell you the truth, it might be best if I don't say much more about our troubles here in Charlotte, lest some of his friends from Richmond PD are riders and reading this. Don't want to hijack this thread in a different direction. My concern is what motorcycle apparel best protected Chipper in his crash. And BTW, there is no such thing as an "accident", we refer to them as collisions or crashes. I hope the investigating officers wrote the at fault driver a fist full of tickets.

I'd be willing to bet that they were distracted by something...

Not that that is irritating as heck or anything. I won't comment on unions, mostly because I'm a Sociology dude, but having a chief unsatisfied with the look of safe motorcycle officers...I'll echo someone else and say that he must be a little twisted. A safe and protected officer always looks more ready, willing, able, and honestly stylish than an officer who looks like safety isn't a concern. I have a number of friends from college who work in law enforcement, and I don't know a single one who would choose less protection over more given the protection doesn't impede the job.

And agreed: I think farther up the driver of the impacting truck got cited, and rightfully so. Here in Hawaii I've had a pretty good level of cool with car and truck drivers and my willingness to be safe instead of rushed. Hopefully that's the pattern most of us encounter.
