MedJet: Worth it?

I was thinking of getting Medjet insurance as I've got a few interstate rides coming up. Does anyone in here have and would you reccomend it to one who doesn't?

Re: MedJet: Worth it?

MedjetAssist is a medical evacuation membership program that arranges medical transfer to the hospital of the member's choice. If a Medjet member becomes hospitalized more than 150 miles from home and meets transport criteria, Medjet will arrange medical transfer to the hospital of their choice at no additional cost. All the member pays is their membership fee.

Here is the catch, "and meets transport criteria" what does that mean?

It does not seem to expensive especially if you go for the 5 year plan, but for domestic use it seems like overkill...

Re: MedJet: Worth it?

Wow, talk about overkill...

Wear an identification bracelet. Call 911 on your cell phone. Add the max medical coverage to your bike and personal medical insurance policy. You're gonna' get a helicopter ride no matter what to your nearest ER if you're really messed up...

Maybe buy a SPOT app for your smart phone for 170 bucks if you're all that concerned about your demise or have loved ones that can't stand the idea of you being incommunicado for more than 4 hours at a time.

SPOT

If you're traveling in Africa on a GS and have unlimited funds for an insanely expensive "insurance policy" - since that's all it really is - go for it.

Buffalo Springfield said it best:

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

Re: MedJet: Worth it?

If you are so banged up you must stay in the hospital they fly you home so the wife doesnot have to travel to be by your side. She makes me buy it when I have a lot of trips to make. Small price to pay to shut her up, er I mean keep her happy.

I suspect this is the real advantage, having the ability to be flown to a hospital of your choosing, presumably close to home.

Re: MedJet: Worth it?

Also check out DAN - Divers Alert Network. (just a coincidence) I've been a member for a long time and actually used the service about 11 years ago, getting from Miami to Tampa after a non SCUBA accident. Service is very inexpensive and they will get you home if your accident takes place more than 50 miles away from home.

The accident does not have to be SCUBA related.

Re: MedJet: Worth it?

One of our members was seriously injured near Deals Gap and spent several weeks in a Knoxville, hospital.

When he was released, still in a wheelchair, still mending broken bones & hip they (insurance) wanted him to fly commercial Knoxville to JAX. There was no way to do this.

Called MedJet and he had a private jet to JAX with nurse.

In his, and my opinion it is worth every penny.
