Daytona Bike Week 2011

Is anybody going to Daytona 2011 that has room for two adult, professional males to crash?

We are looking at arriving Wed, 9 Mar and leave Sunday.

We are willing to share costs.

PM me if you have extra room please.

Thanks,
Glenn

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

Glenn, Just an FYI, there are usually rooms available in Deland, about 30 minutes from Daytona and a much nicer place to stay, In My Opinion.... Several very good restaurants too. I'm not staying the night, I'll be there for just one day...

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

Last year I camped with the BMW group in Bunnel and had a great time. My only caveat is to check the weather forecast cause it got chilly at night last year.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

where in Bunnel?
Or is this the B/2 at the Holiday Camp Ground on I-95?

I have been staying at the B/2 just off I-95, but the freeway noise gets old, and they keep jacking the price up.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

Yes, the Holiday campground is in Bunnell. I think the airheads are sponsoring it this year. Last year, it was $18.00 a night which seems OK during bike week and as far as using the Freeway to go the 15 or 20 minutes to Daytona, I would suggest simply riding over to the great little town of Flagler beach and doing the scenic route on the coast to Daytona or riding the scenic Hammock over to Ormand Beach. Come to think of it, as nice and friendly as Flagler Beach is with a great pier, restaurants and on Friday and Saturday one of the best Farmer's Markets in America, why would anyone actually want to spend time in Daytona Beach during Bike Week? I know many a rider who has been going to Bike Week for years and having a great time without ever setting foot in Daytona Beach. As far as noise from the freeway, the noise from my teeth chattering in cold pretty much took care of that.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

Thanks everybody.

This is all good info.

Can anybody point me in a direction to contact the Air Head group or organizer please?

I don't mind camping. I like cold. I have gear for cold. $18 sounds way better than $180 a night.

Cheers,
Glenn

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

Lots of fun and plenty to do. I normally ride over the bay bridge tunnel and go down 17 nearly all the way to Savannah. If you have the time from Virginia Beach, its only an hour or two more than slabbing it over to Emporia and down 95.

From where do you start?

Are you going to Daytona this year?

Do you make the trip in a single day or stop overnight? Route 17 is much longer clockwise.

From the previous two years we found NO evidence of BMW Corporate being at bike week.

Maybe we just were in the wrong locations.

It does show that BMW might be here:

But then again the site says only NYC and CA

Mapquest shows from Ocean City, MD or Virginia Beach to Charleston to be about 1-3 hours longer but a few miles shorter on 17. My experience has been that 17 is faster than one would expect this time of year because there is not traffic around Myrtle Beach. Avoid rush hour at Jacksonville, New Bern and Wilmington NC. If I have to slab it on 95 I usually crash at at cheap motel somewhere south of Rocky Mount.

Honestly, whether I go this year will be dependent on the 10 day forecast a few days before. Being retired, I have lots of leeway.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

I am staying flexible. And waiting for commitment from a couple of riding buddies.

If they fall through, then I may just blow off Daytona and go find the Natchez Trace (http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/2285/index.html)

I hope I can talk my daughter into going along since that is her college's Spring Break week.

My wife and I rode 17 down to Charleston, SC once. The road just seemed long.

I just finished an Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1000 on Dec 31. The slab to Savannah, GA was quick...breakfast in Savannah and back to VA Beach....1051 miles in 19 hours and 21 minutes total clock time. We left VA Beach after midnight Friday morning and were back in time for dinner Friday night.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

It's official! We are riding to FL to join Bob and his FLAirhead group at the Holiday Travel Park in Bunnell.

Planning to arrive late Wed evening, spend the day riding back up to St Augustine and the coastal highway on Thur, then try to get my (new to me) Corbin seats modified on Fri or Sat.

Leaving FL and heading to VA on Sunday.

A big thanks to Bob for quick replies on email.

Cheers,

Glenn

Looked at the gathering in Daytona Beach a few years, but when I researched hotel rates before and during the event the difference was dramatic and it completely turned me off. They would give sports ticket scalpers a good name. That seemed indicative of how that city values bikers and encouraged me to look elsewhere. My rant.

No worries Denny. Rants are always allowed.

Costs of hotels is one reason I am camping, plus I think there is much more cameraderie found, espcially at a group camp site.

I am only going to Daytona because I have never been...always willing to try big rallies once.

I may never go back to Daytona for a rally, but at least i can say "Been there, done that, got the T shirt".

Eventually, I may even work up the nerve to ride to Sturgis...just once.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

Daytona is fun, like and can be compared to a bikers carnival... Night time on the main drag is fun to watch, but not on a bike. Way too congested. I like to go from time to time, just to see what is new and occasionally BMW is there for test rides.

If you are planning to spend the night, there are lots of places around Daytona that are more reasonable and not nearly as crowded. Deland is only 30 minutes away, and a nice ride.

If you are into skydiving, Deland is the place to be too.... Lots of bikers hang out there for the food and drink at the Perfect Spot Bar and Restaurant.

Need to hire a bike for Daytona Bike Week 2011

Evening all,

I'm looking to hire a bike for two days and travel up each day from Cocoa Beach or Orlando. I plan to go on the 11th and 12th.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a hire company that they at least know about ,please. I don't arrive until the 7th and have first to visit my poorly Mum at Cocoa before I can have some fun....
It's just to short a time (10 days) to think about bringing the LT over.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

I've been told by my parents who live in the area that prices are higher for Spring Break. Most locals would rather have Speed Week, Bike Week & Biketoberfest over spring break anytime.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

Just came from there today. Saw enough dumba*s harley dudes being "rebels" to last a life time.?

Funny??? they all seemed to look alike??? Ponytails, wife-beater "T" shirts, tattoos; so much noise and so little performance.

How many fat guys on noisey bikes does one need to see in a lifetime?

A1A was crammed with trailers! The saying goes: "I drove my trailer to bike week."

One more thing, when did all those riders become "too cool to wave?"

It's a little town, I think south of Huston, called, Rosharon, TX. I've never been there, but I'm really looking forward to it. Seems like I fly through Texas a lot, but never really stop. Maybe you could come out and jump with us... or at least share a beer!

We get started on the 6th and by the 8th or 9th, after a dozen or so practice jumps, should start to get everyone together. The operation at the airport is called Skydive Spaceland.

Sadly, they had two fatalities there earlier in the week when two new beginner skydivers got tangled up in each others parachutes at a very low altitude. They were not paying attention and like a bike, that can be deadly.

That's pretty true. I lived in Daytona for 10 years ('87-'97). For us locals, the Speedweek folks were obnoxious, Spring Breakers were annoying, and the bikers were considered the most fun and spent the most money. This was well before I rode. Yes it was loud but they were somewhat amusing. I'll never forget sitting at a light one day with a Harley next to me. The bike was shaking so much, I was expecting to see the riders fillings start dropping to the pavement. But he looked tough.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

@ Dan: I will be camping with the FLAirheads in Bunnell. Be safe with the group sky diving. I have always wanted to try, but might wait for a 50th Birthday present to myself in a couple of years.

"Drove my trailer to bike week"....

I know that Thur I am picking up a friend in Deland at the Crossroads Bar. She and I are going to ride up and tour St Augustine.

Friday I want to take a scenic tour of swamps and stuff.

Friday night and Saturday will be spent around Daytona Rally sites.I have a (new to me) set of Corbin seats. I am anxious to try them out for the ride to/from Daytona. I understand that Corbin will be present at Daytona and that they will modify the seat/covers. I would very much like to have the seat pan shaved so I can straddle the LT a little easier. But Corbin says that they don't modify pans.

Oh well.

SHAMELESS PLUG: I will be down Wed evening. I will even bring the JPEGS and Highway Ottomans if anybody is interested in buying them. They are listed in the Classified section of this forum.

Looking forward to meeting some FL LT riders.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

Thanks Glenn,

Be careful crossing the FL/GA border.... heard that they might be stopping / harassing bikers. Maybe you and I will have the only BMW K1200LT in Daytona - I'll be at the Russ M. parking center on Friday. That place is like a bikers mall. Maybe run into ya...

Sometime I want to ride my LT to Trailer Week.

I've been to actual Bike Week 3 times. Once IN a Mustang. Once on our Suzukit C50T Boulevard (ON a Mustang seat) and once on our LT. A trailer was never involved. All 3 trips involved a stop at the Florida welcome center on I-75 for various reasons. On all 3 stops I noticed the same thing: motorcycles of various types being takon off of or out of trailers. It looked like wives or girlfriends were then driving the implement used to tow the trailer. I guess in this way they could say "I rode to Bike Week"?

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

We live some 45 min to Daytona and make 2 trip s each year up to tie events.

One trip in the car (this last Sunday) is with the kids. They like to see the bikes, beg for stickers, free chotchkies, get posters, ohh and ahh at the loud pipes, music, festivities and of course get some junk food. It is always my buudy and myself and the kids. (two boys and two girls)

This last Sunday seemes tame and mild. The crowds were down as we could walk and not get too seperated from the kids who are having a good time.

One note I did see 4 LTs (not riding together) coming west on I4 on the drive up there on Sunday. and another 4 LTs (not parked together) in the parking lots next to the speedway.

I hope everyone has a good time, enjoys the show and is safe up there.

Re: Daytona Bike Week 2011

Bike week isn't so bad, and of course you are going to see alot of trailers.

I never complain about so many trailers there because most of the owners are just as hard core about riding as anybody else. Just take a look at all the different licence plates and where they are from. Bike Week is held in the winter.

My bike and myself stand a better chance of making it to Daytona if the bike is in a trailer and I'm driving the truck pulling said trailer through ice and snow and blizzards especially if I'm coming from Wyoming or Maine or Montana etc etc etc.

If you can make it to Daytona, no matter what you ride, or how you got here, we are glad to have you here.

It's very cool to participate in the biggest motorcycle event in the world.

Plus the Daytona 200 is an outstanding race.

I just learned what the Russ M center is...That was my plan for Friday also. I may have to move it to Thur if the rains hit, then ride to St. Augustine on Friday.

You will recognize me. I will be the one wearing a collared shirt and some Rev It gear.

But true to form, My LT is still in pieces in the garage. I just picked up a couple of those nutsert things from the dealer (Closed Mondays). The tupperware goes on this morning so I can pack the tent/gear this afternoon.

I am supposed to leave at 0230 Wed morning. Hopefully I can get my planned 4 hour nap this evening.
