Different kind of Radio thread

I have read all of the Jensen replacement threads. I have read all of the "battery disconnect" threads also.

Search is my friend.

My question is a little different.

I have a friend with a 2002 LT (CD Player) that is being totaled by the insurance company.

My radio in my 2005 LT (CD Plater) has started to die (loss of left/rear speaker, intermittent shutdowns, loss of amplification for my Blitzsafe, etc).

The part numbers from RealOEM.com are:
2002: 65127707658
2005: 65127708052

Is there any reason that his 2002 radio won't plug and play in my 2005?

Thanks for any responses. I am looking to make the exchange on Saturday since the insurance company is picking up his moto next week.

Cheers,
Glenn

Why exchange it? They'll never know it's not there...

Don't know if it will work or not sorry.

Re: Different kind of Radio thread

I talked to the parts department at Morton's BMW in Fredericksburg, VA this evening. They couldn't think of any major differences between the part numbers. They think that maybe the 2002 part might have had a "dongle" for the antenna to plug into to, whereas the 2005 antenna plugs directly into the radio body.

Any other ideas? I hope they are plug and play replacements.

Re: Different kind of Radio thread

My guess is the controllers are not compatible (the circuit board under the buttons). This is based on the different response when you go into the settable parameters. See this article Radio programming .

The selections are different for the early radios and the later ones. There was also an issue using a rev 2 radio with a rev3 controller, etc., on the early bikes.

But you are welcome to try it anyway.

Re: Different kind of Radio thread

John,

That article did not sound too promising for an exchange between the donor 2002 and my 2005.

I am not sure I want to remove the tupperware and radio just to find out that the connections don't plug and play.

I will check the software versions on both bikes. I don't want to inherit an old software version and get battery drain.

Thanks for the insight. If nothing else, I learned more about my baby.

Re: Different kind of Radio thread

The fact that the buttons behave differently does not in any way correlate to whether you can exchange the radios. The button functionality is controlled by the firmware in the radio, nothing more. You would of course have the functionality of the radio you intall, not the original one. There are a couple of small things in the newer radio which you'd lose.

Actaully there are two different firmware issues to deal with. One is the controller firmware and the other is the radio firmware. There are alread known issues with mixing the early radio versions and controllers, so there is no reason to think this would not still be a possibility with the later radio firmware and an early controller.

Re: Different kind of Radio thread

We chose not to swap the 2002 into the 2005.

My biggest detractor was the 2002 display vs the 2005 dash display...that and I did not really feel like taking my tupperware off as the snow started falling. His moto was in the garage and mine was outside.

I will just have to break down and send mine to Becker and let them refurbish it, and add a USB port, and an Aux port.

Thanks again for the input. I love this site.

Glenn - let me know how it goes with Becker - I'm looking at sending my defective one to them in March/April...

Re: Different kind of Radio thread

Thanks Bill. It was great to meet you and Gretchen also.

I am thinking about asking my wife if she wants to come up to your golf course/country club for brunch on Sunday.

I will keep you posted if she says yes. I hope you and Gretchen might be able to join us.

Cheers,
