Dan, mine acted similarly last winter. It was caused by the common wire (ground) bundle behind the headlight, that had short circuited and melted to an always hot wire. I think it was feeding power backwards through the ground wire to the grip.
I hope you don't have the same problem. Using a multimeter and with the fuse pulled, I started searching at the handgrips and traced the wires, disconnecting them to isolate the circuit whenever I could. The multimeter was set in ohms resistance or continuity mode. The disconnects are 1) at the fork bridge, 2) on upper left side of left fork 3) behind the headlight between the forks. I had my gas tank off, but I don't remember if it had to be off for connectors 1&2.
