Final drive rebuild for achuras

Bike history: Thought to be the original drive, bike has 31K and is a 2001.

Existing shim set up was 0.77mm. (a 0.15mm shim plus a nominal 0.60mm shim which actually mic'd at 0.62mm)

Shim thickness for new bearing calculated to be 0.45mm using DMAN's dial indicator method and Service Manual depth micrometer method.

Excel spreadsheet calcuations attached.
Failed bearing pics attached.
Bearing retainer was not yet broken. Both races and the balls have severe spalling. The spalling of the races is predominately on one side of the race.

Re: Final drive rebuild for achuras

I'm surprised the cage is still in one piece & that a bearing that over preloaded can last 31K miles. The ball pattern imprint suggests that at some early time a big chunk went through the races in a repeat fashion.

Re: Final drive rebuild for achuras

I guess we need to remember the preload specified is for the tapered bearing, not the big bearing. However it appears too much is not good for either bearing.
