slipping in 5th gear and then it went away...

Today I started my return from ATL to Orlando.

The bike had been in the hotel parking deck for the last 5 days, and was un ridden.

I rode to the meeting site at 7am over surface streets.. It was VERY chilly.

At 10:30 am, I ATGATT and loaded up and hit the interstate.

I was coming coming down 85 to 285 to 75 and as I was coming off the overpass, I got some open interstate and in 5th hit the throttle...

Then the RPMS started to climb too fast.

I throttled back, slipped into 4th and hit the throttle and 4th was fine.

Back into 5th and hit the throttle and RPM go high again and clutch slipping. I tested a few times just to confirm and every time I got slipping in 5th with a heavy throttle.

Well I remembered that others reported that they had slippage in 5th but were able to make it home, so I decided to do the same thing and just use an easy throttle in 5th for the 500 mile trip home.

So here is the strange thing... on the last 25 miles I hit the throttle hard in 5th and NO slipping...

went to 4th and then back to 5th and the same thing, NO slippage...

Well I go home after 500 miles in 7 hours, averaging 74.9 MPH.

Any clues?

THANKS in advance.

Re: slipping in 5th gear and then it went away...

Not unusual. Mine started doing that and I ended up putting a few thousand more miles on it before I finaly did the clutch job and then it was still only slipping in fifth and only once (could not do it twice in a row). The plate was nearing the end of its service limit but was not fully worn out and there was some light oil contamination. I would just keep an eye on it if there are no other signs of oil or brake fluid (slave) leaks. Failure is not iminent unless those are present.

MAN you guys ROCK!!!!

OK, so how many miles "should" you get off a clutch?

I forgot to mention that I have 56K miles on the bike. I purchased 3rd hand 4 months ago with 49K miles. 7K miles in 4 months, How am I doing? I am no Neil Peart but doing my best.

Where do I look for signs of oil or brake fluid (slave) leaks? I found some pictures of a clitch replacement at Dave>LT Clutch Repair. Holly carp bat man. That might be over my head if I got to take do all that...

I did notice that the clutch fluid looked low, but I was only checking while I was riding. I will do an oil change this weekend along with a replacement of the Oil Sight Window Glass and check the clutch fluid level.

Thanks again, you and the rest of the K1200LT.com website members are the best.

If I can help anyone in Orlando, let me know.

I wonder how far away Hazel Green, AL, is from Orlando. I might be heading that way soon if you have done a successful clutch replacement

slipping in 5th gear and then it went away...

I replaced my Clutch in December of last year. I have a 2001 K1200ltc with 70000 miles on it.
I have put 10000 since the repair and I am having problems. Pulls away hard from a stop in first gear. Slips in four and fifth gear.
I can not believe I could have burnt up a clutch in 10000 miles. To replace the transmission new is 3500 plus 1600 in labor.
Would anyone know a good place to send a transmissions to have it rebuilt. How can I know for sure that is my real problem?

Re: slipping in 5th gear and then it went away...

Sort of depends.

How much oil is getting on the clutch and how hard/often do you get it to slip?

It won't heal on its own and only get worse over time. Make some long range plans for a clutch job.

Looks like is should have headed the otherway when I left ATL yesterday.

Oh well.

I will "check" it out over the next week and see if this is a real problem or not.

Thanks

You should be able to get a used transmission off of ebay or craigs list. There is one in colorado now for $500.

My 2003 LTE did the slip in 5th trick when it had about 36 k on it. I now have 128450 miles on that very same clutch (not slipping at all). I have no good answer why, but I am proud it has worked out this way.

I will let everyone know how many miles I get out of it.

Ron
