Transmission oil

Howdy,

Replaced transmission oil on my 05 LT. It looked "milky" while draining.
The magnet on drain plug had some gunk, and tiny metal shavings.

1) What would be the cause of this???

2) Should I drain the new oil after a few miles, and see what it looks like?

3)What is the recommended change intervels for Transmission on the LT?
The old oil had about 20,000 miles on it.

??

Thanks for the continuing help.

Re: Transmission oil

What oil are you using? Redline?
"Milky" can (not always) suggest emulsification.
If that's the case, and you can only confirm with UOA, you should change the oil, and probably switch brands.
The other situation may just be condensation caused by short trips which doesn't allow the oil to heat up enough to burn off the water. You'd normally see that sort of thing on something like an oil filler cap.
Got any photos?

Re: Transmission oil

I can't tell you if anything is wrong with yours, but I changed mine 3 days ago and it looked like it did when it went in, after 6,000 miles. Clear and amber looking. Just a little graphite like dust on the magnet. Yours sounds like it needs to be looked at a little closer.

Re: Transmission oil

+1 what Dan says.

My 05 has always been very clean. I am actually extending the changing interval to 18K (every 3 oil changes) and it always comes out clean, no water evidence and no flakes.

How many gears have you "ground"?

I don't remember grinding any gears, but I'm sure I have....
Thinking about draining the oil again in about 1,000 miles.

Thanks for the input.

Re: Transmission oil

I am getting ready to change the transmission oil on my 08LT. It has only 7K miles on it but this would be the first change. and, the oil inside is 2.5 years old I think.

Re: Transmission oil

I am not the original owner :-) I bought the bike in July this year, already put 1800 miles on it. I also have an 04 LT.
