Talking New K1200 LT Owner

I am very happy to have joined this forum , but even happier that I just rode home my new 09 K1200 LT. I am very impressed with this bike, having come from a 08 RoadStar 1750. It really can't get any better than this. Looking forward to a long a happy relationship with my Bimmer.

Congrats. However, you have to get your names straight, Bimmers are BMW cars, Beemers are BMW motorcycles.

Old history. Back in the days, BSA's were known as Beezers, and BMW's were Beemers. When BMW started getting popular for their cars, they became Bimmers to avoid confusion.

Lots of stuff on the Internet about it.

There is a BMW car enthusiast magazine called Bimmer, and they used to have a picture in the front page of a car and a motorcycle, with "This is a Bimmer, This is a Beemer" . Don't know if that was in all, many, or just one issue I saw.

Congratulations on your new bike. It is very different from any other bike. My previous bike was a 2006 Vulcan Classic which weighed more than the LT. I still am cautious and treat it with respect to a point. My view and experience in the last month can be found here:

Greetings! It is in fact a Beemer! A BEAUTIFUL BRAND NEW BLACK BEEMER! You lucky dog! I can assure you that the more you ride it the more you'll love it.

Be sure to keep the revs up! She will be much happier and more responsive if you shift at 4000+ RPM's. After she's broken in and you get to meet Mr. Rev Limiter you'll know you're having fun. Amazingly agile in the twisties and wonderfully comfortable on the slab. Great bike to ride!

You may find yourself occaisionally stealing a look at her parked in the garage.

Have a great time riding and keep in touch with the forum. Lots of good information here.

Thanks for the warm welcomes and the feedback. Seems like the there is a lot of experience and knowledge here. I can't to get her broken in and really ride her. Planning a long weekend on along Skyline Drive mid October. Should be a blast.

Welcome aboard Scott. You will find great folks and lots of good info and help on this forum. You will love those ABS brakes in Lancaster county when you suddenly come over a rise and see a horse and buggy in front of you

Congrats!

I just joined the masses as well with an older model and I'm loving it.
My only gripe, so far, was the seat but that just may be me since I haven't done the long distance street riding thing in many yrs. Now that I just received my air hawk in the mail yesterday I cant wait til the weekend!

Welcome from the West Coast. I too just picked up a new '09 LT, love it. Did you get the free comm system with yours? If so have you decided on a helmet comm, BMW or J&M?

Well, actually it can.

Take a look at the K1600 forum. If BMW ever builds a new LT (and I don't consider the GTL to be an LT replacement) based on this drive train, it could get better! That would solve the issue with the clutch getting oiled from leaks from the engine, transmission or clutch slave cylinder. And if they have finally solved the FD issue, things would be a LOT better.

However, the LT is certainly pretty good when it is running and not awaiting parts or repair.

Speaking of break-in, when I bought my 07 everyone at the dealership from the salesman to the owner to the service manager said that the proper way to break in an LT was to "ride it like you stole it."

I was hesitant to do this since I've generally followed the manufacturer's owner's manual recommendations pretty strictly. However, I decided to give it a shot and rode it pretty hard for the first 1,000 miles including many runs to redline. It seems to have worked pretty well although I wasn't sure it first.

I used at least half a quart of oil between changes up to about 12,000 miles. The dealer changed the oil at the initial service at about 800 miles and I have changed it every 3,000 miles since then using BMW oil up until the last change when I swtiched to Castrol 4T as I can get that locally. After 12,000, each change had the oil level a little higher. The last change was just past 18,000 miles and I now have nearly 22,000 on the Castrol oil and the level has not dropped a detectable amount. So, it appears that the dealer was also correct when they told me that it took about 18,000 miles to fully break-in the Nikasil cylinders.

Mine did come with the free Comm system, I already have Scala Rider headsets, which are decent and allows me to talk to my other buddies, so I am debating where or not to install it. The dealer gave me a credit of $350 if I choose not to have them do the work, and I would keep the comm system in the box Any feedback?

Also great day in the NE to do some breaking in and getting used too the crazy amount of RPM's this bike has versus my RoadStar, and man does she love the twistes. Never felt so comfortable on a bike this size. I have only had it a week an have already clocked 575 miles.

I would DEFINITELY WITHOUT QUESTION have the comm system installed. I use the Scala Q2 multiset, which we enjoy immensely but there have been many times I wished that I had the factory comm system.

Welcome to the LT community. I too just picked up an '09 LT a couple of weeks ago. I went a good ways equipping mine. I got the free comm system and with the $1,250 of free accessories, went for the CB radio and Nav system. At this point I'm loving the bike. It loves everything I throw at it. My most recent bike was a Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager (2009) and it's night and day different. However, the bike I had prior to that was an '04 Goldwing. The Goldwing is more appropriate to compare with the LT but I think the LT is a better bike. It's a little lighter, much more fun in the corners and gets way better mileage. The only thing the Goldwing can do better is on the power side of the equation. Acceleration is harder on the Goldwing but when you get into the power range on the LT, it's no slouch. Anyway, so far I'm loving my LT and can't wait to rack up the mile.
