Top case lid retention strap issue

I've run into a issue on my new-to-me '05 with the top case lid retention strap (don't know what else to call it). I've searched here on the site for a similar occurrence (didn't find any) and I went back to the dealer and looked at a '01 on the lot with ~79k miles on it - not exhibiting this, so I don't know how common it is. A picture is worth a 1000 words, so I'll let the photo below do the job...any ideas on how to best repair this? I haven't perfected my technique in removing the top case bottom liner, but it appears to be part of the outer shell/body - very $$$ to replace I'm guessing. As far as repairing, any suggestions as to how? Super glue? PlasticWeld epoxy glue? Perform actual plastic welding?

It wasn't this way when I took delivery of the bike 2 weeks ago or I'm sure that I would've noticed it . With the top case lid fully opened, it's exerting enough force to pull
up on the bottom liner; don't believe that it'll cut loose, but it makes me nervous just the same. Already had the strap end (the "loop" part that goes around the retaining "pin") slip out and allow the lid to flip all the way over - anyone know a fix/mod to prevent THAT from happening again? If the retaining pin was just another 1/4" longer that would do the trick. Thanks!

Re: Top case lid retention strap issue

Mine broke like that back in July of 04. The fix I used was some dill some small holes to give it some bit and lots of JB weld. Then I made sure I never let the lid fall open again. It is still holding today. The dealer wanted to replace the lower case. I didn't want to give up the brand new bike for something I could fix.

Re: Top case lid retention strap issue

I find that little pin breaks really easily - went through a couple on my 2008 before I went to using a zip tie. AND I have learned to not flop the top lid open

Re: Top case lid retention strap issue

My "holder" broke completely free of the side case! I went to Ace Hardware and picked up some epoxy (said it was good for rubber and plastic) and took care of the issue. Came in a black 2 part syringe type tube.

Used the same stuff to fix the cracked bottom of the case as well.. Around the mount screws... Still holding after a few months of constant riding...

Re: Top case lid retention strap issue

There is a simple and permant fix to PREVENT this problem from happening:

Take a needle and some thread and make a new loop to the strap. The idea is to shorten it so that your lid just opens a bit over 90 degrees. This way it will not have the possibility to gain so much momentum in case your happen to have a poor grip when opening it.

This has worked for me over 6 years and this is usually my mod # 1 that I teach the LT newbies.

Re: Top case lid retention strap issue

No way?

Are you saying BMW overengineered many things yet
decided to make an intergral part of the trunk assembly
a part of the exterior and with the structural strength of
plastic or weak metal?

And yet still... "it's all cool man... there's a fix" is the vibe
over, "Um, guys, can we get a petition going for a factory
recall here... the top case component is near $1,000 for
the entire bottom part of the trunk."

My strap came off the screw a few times, making the lid
come crashing down on my seat. I remedied it by putting
a sleave (a plastic spacer) over the screw, thereby making
it fatter in diameter and filling up the entire gap in there so
that there was more strength on it.

Good luck... as always.

I broke the little pin off the knob yesterday. Spent hours searching through all my nuts/bolts/and screws and could not find anything that I could make work. Thanks for the idea on the zip tie, I going to do that today

I did exactly this with mine, but used dental floss instead of thread for strength.

My mount did not break, but the plastic threads on the original "bolt" stripped and the bolt would not stay in place to hold the strap. So, I got the appropriate size steel bolt and then drilled out the original plastic khurled part of the original bolt and stuck the new steel both through the plastic knurled knob. I now have a metal bolt to hold the strap, yet still have the OEM looking knob to use to screw it in and out.

I thought I had a picture of it, but I can't find it now. If you are interested in the details, let me know and I will go take it out of the bike and take a picture.

That is what I intended to do but could not find the right bolt in all my junque Do you know what size & thread the thing is? We have a local hardware that has a great selection of metric and std. stainless steel hardware.

No, I don't recall from memory. I just took the original plastic bolt to the local Home Depot and found a match. After fitting the original plastic knob to the bolt, I also filed off the threads on the end of the bolt so that they wouldn't abrade the strap.
