Fuel Leak

Just had some final warranty service done @ 37K which had been previously reported.

Warranty work included - replacing a leaking output shaft seal (Gearbox) and a fuel level sending unit.

Non warranty work - new air filter & fuel filter since they were already in there & had the panels off. Two hose clamps are also on my bill...

So heres the question. I left the dealer and figured I'd run the fuel down to see if the low fuel sensor which had been coming on when way over 1/4 tank still shows on the gauge. Unfortunately the replacement of the fuel sending unit didn't fix this. The light still comes on when I can run about 100 miles. After stopping to refuel, I immediately picked up a fuel smell when I got back on the road. Stopped to check and can't see fuel leaking, but smell it on the right side. There was no fuel leak or smell prior to refueling. The dealer I use is about 160 miles away and are good folks, but I don't have plans to get back there in the next couple of weeks.

Lastly - had some fairing mounted Motolights installed and really like them.

Re: Fuel Leak

The dealer can set just where that light comes on but the fuel level has to at the new set point to do it. So I hope that is not the reason you had the sender changed out because it has nothing to do with the light, other than to provide a level where it will trigger at when set by the MoDiTec computer the dealer has.

I suspect they did not get the big gland nut on the fuel pump assy tight enough after replacing the fuel filter. May be able to snug it up a bit and stop the leak.

Re: Fuel Leak

Thanks John, I have had a problem with this since day one and though I'd described the problem correctly. I went from the light coming on to "pushing in 5 miles" to the light coming on with a 100 miles left and between 1/2 & 1/4 on the fuel gauge.

As for the leak, sounds like it needs to go back or I need to decide to learn to take the plastic off. So far I've only done fluids, but it;s probably time to get better at real maintenance cause I can't afford it . Other than difficult wrenching or costly BMW repairs I'm as hooked as anyone else on the ride...
