The Best $19.99 You Will Spend On An LT

I am all about safety these days with my LT. And the more things I can do to make my bike/me more noticeable the better I feel. I recently purchased a pair of Muth mirrors at a cost of $200+. Huge investment but adds a nice level of security when making a turn.

I was reading a few threads about Autozone having an LED lights so I went there today. As I was looking at their LED lights, i noticed a flexible pair of red 14" strips of LEDs for $19.99. What was interesting about these lights was their positioning on the actual strip, They were not your typical strips of LEDs as the lights were pointing sideways - which made them perfect for installing under the fake chrome bumper on the side luggage containers as the red LEDs faced sideways.

After getting them home, I stuck them under the fake chrome bumpers on the side luggage containers and they were basically invisible as the strip is maybe an 1/8 of an inch thick, I then drilled a hole through the side luggage panel after I took out the brake lights (there are only two bolts that hold the brake lights on) and then drilled two more holes through the inside luggage container to access inside panel of the brake lights. I then tapped into the ground (solid brown) and power wires so the lights went on when I used the blinkers.

The whole process took less than 60 minutes (if you have all the tools and supplies at hand).

Tools:

Drill with 1/8" bit
Black electrician tape
6 grey wire nuts (they are the small ones)
12" speaker wire/small gauage (18) wire for the right luggage panel as the LED light's wire is too short for the splice.

Hints:

1. Cover the LED wire with black electical tape inside the luggage panel - gives it a nice finish.

2. Move the strip to the farthest outside point UNDER the fake chrome strip - if you can see it when looking down on the strip, you moved to too far to the outside of the fake chrome bumper.

3. Don't use too big of a bit for drilling holes.

After the installation, you will see how they will give a nice added level of security when using a blinker.

Hope this helps.

Glenn

Thanks Glenn for the idea. Had to get rear brake shoes for my pickup yesterday. I'll be darned. Found myself at Autozone in the lights dept.

Took less than one hour to install but sure noticed that it is dusty behind the rear lights!

Frank(fpmlt), you checked behind the lights since you polished up your gas tank?

Thanks again,

Loren
