High Idle - Lower MPG

I haven't looked into the problem yet but for the last couple of weeks I generally have a high idle. Usually around 1200-1300rpm. If I blip the throttle it will drop back down to around 1000rpm. At the same time I have noticed that my mileage has dropped down considerably, down to around 35mpg.

Any ideas before I dig in?

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: High Idle - Lower MPG

Crappy fuel mileage is probably due to "winter gas" and the cool temperatures this time of year. I see tremendous swings in fuel mileage early/late in the season vs. mid-summer.

Did you do anything to the bike over the winter? In particular disconnecting the battery or letting it go dead? If so, the high idle problem may be due to that, and you will have to reset your throttle position sensor (TPS). To do that, turn the bike to ON, then rotate the throttle 3 times to full throttle and back to idle, then turn the bike OFF. After that it should have reset the sensor and your idle will (should be...) normal. It could also be a sticking throttle cable as well, but I'd put my first money on a TPS reset.

Re: High Idle - Lower MPG

Pete,

I've been riding almost everyday for the last couple of months so it isn't something from sitting over the winter.

After doing some reading it looks like it might be the O2 sensor, low voltage sensor or possibly the TPS is going south.

Thanks,
Kevin
