Noobish Centerstand Question

How important is the power center stand? Can it be deployed/retracted while the rider is on the bike?

Still searching for the right LT.

If you mean if it's strong enough to lift the bike including the driver, then yes. I am a fairly big guy (100 kgs), and it easily lifts the bike with me on it.

The power center stand motor will not work with engaged clutch or any brake applied, so you have to be stationary to do so.

The power center stand motor cannot retract the stand. You still have to shake ye olde hips to get it off the stand.

Here's something that I sometimes do at a long red light, or whenever I have to wait a bit longer: put the bike on the center stand and relax with both your feet on the steps. When the time is come to go, put the bike in 1st gear, push the bike off the stand without your feet touching the ground (ie shake those hips) and as soon as it hits the ground, drive away.

Yes it can be, plus a pillion, plus a load of gear. However, out of mechanical sympathy, I always ask her to get off first, and then stand astride the bike whilst it's operating.

The centerstand has enough safeties that you can't deploy it while riding, and as stated, you have to be stopped in neutral and not hold the brakes for it to work. At first I thought it was nothing but a gadget......just an unneeded extra. After my first 500 mile day, I changed my mind. It really IS a pleasure to just push the button and hoist the bike up on the stand at the end of a long, cold, rainy ride. Now I understand why it's there.

Xios: A few times, I have not been able to get my fully-loaded LT off the stand. Had to get the luggage out of the cases to get going (at 165lbs, 5'6", I do struggle with the bike at times...).

These experiences considerably cooled my interest in a power centerstand. Initially, I bought from Hannigan a power unit from an '05 LT converted to a trike, planning to mount it on my '01. It sat in my garage for a while - then, I sold it to another enthusiast. I could envision myself lulled into a false sense of convenience, popping the bike up onto the stand at every occasion and then being stuck there. It did not help that about 2007 this forum was full of reports of the electro-hydraulic actuators failing.

Your Mileage May Vary, of course. Having to operate the stand with only my (puny) human power, I am very judicious about where and when to do that.


And, by the way, I'd never use the stand in the street, at a traffic light.
I could argue about the merits of being in or out of gear in such situation, clutch in versus clutch out - but standing there completely defenseless, lifted up? SurfMan, you are a much more trusting person than I am...

YouŽll do just fine without hydraulics. Mine -01 is a "manual one", and I just thougth that "good, then there is nothing that might need reparation". But IŽm sure if my bike had this system, would I be happy to have it and wouldnŽt be concerned at all about the mechanics...

I have had my troubles with the EHCS, but SO has a torn ACL & is unable to get off the bike with me on. I usually use the EHCS with her sitting & me straddling....have also used the sidestand to do this also but prefer the EHCS. And with the recent finds of replacement motors & pumps I am a little less concerned.

I only do this *sometimes* at red lights at a train crossing, or a ferry for example. I usually skip the entire row of waiting cars, stand at the front and do my trick

At regular traffic lights, well, what can I say... I can be crazy at times, but I am not tired of life yet

I am also new to the LT, and love the electric center stand.

Too bad it doesn't pivot to assist when we drop it in a parking lot.

All the bystanders, who were laughing their heads off, seeing you on the ground (why do I know that feeling?), are now simply amazed!

Wow!

Now, with my luck, in the very last moment, the EWS indicator comes on, everything jams up and the bike rolls over... Figures...
