How about some more data. What is your indication of overheating and in what phase of riding your 99LT does it happen. Does the temp indicator go into the red zone when you are stuck in traffic on a 90F day and then the fans kick in and lower the temp out of the red zone? If so, it is normal!

Well, not quite. He should have said:

Seriously, though, in low-airflow conditions the bike will be hitting almost the red zone before the fans kick in, even in temperatures as low as 70's. It's not a good idea to idle it for prolonged time.

So, to the OP, mkosky: are your symptoms as described so far?

What every one else said and I'll add that it only over heats if the red light comes on. Every thing other than that is normal. Now they can run a little hot if all the air is not burped out following a flush. But is sounds like this is the same as before the flush.

Here are the specifications for the cooling system.

Thermostat opens @ 85 (185)
Fans Kick in @ 105 (221) (usually very near red on the gage)
High temp light on @ 115 (239)
