Unhappy LT Won't Start

The other day I shorted out my PIAA lights at the switch when in came apart. I got a new switch and went out to replace it. Bike has been parked for a couple of weeks due to bad weather and snow. I found a 4Amp fuse blown and swapped out the fuse from the heated grips. I tried to start it and I hear all the usual noises but just a small "click" when I hit the starter. Battery seemed to be low because shortly after trying this a few times everything kinda went crazy and got dimmer on the dash. Reckon my battery is gone? It's a gel battery installed in 06. I didn't have the battery tender hooked up. Any ideas?.........

Re: LT Won't Start

You could measure your battery voltage but I suspect it is very low. I would put the tender on it and see it it comes up.

Trying to start on a low battery can cause serious issues. Stuck relays to start and they are no fun to get to and buy. I would charge it and try another day to start it.

Re: LT Won't Start

Thanks. I was gonna do a ride with a friend. The ground here is covered in snow but the roads are clear. I shoveled a path to the road. Oh, well. Another day. Where can I find a fuse to replace the one that blew? Are they standard blade type fuses? Thanks again..............

Re: LT Won't Start

Since your bike is a 2003, you do not have to worry about the old stuck relay problem, as the change to the new protected relay happened sometime in 2001 model year if I remember correctly. With that newer circuit, the starter relay is disabled when the battery voltage is too low.

Charge or replace the battery and you should be OK to go again.

Re: LT Won't Start

I took my volt meter and checked my pickup battery. I then checked my motorcycle battery. The volts were about the same. I wiggled the shifter and then hit the starter. It turned over slowly so I let it go. I either need a new battery or a good charge on this one. Thanks again.....................

Just for the heck of it I hit the starter. It busted right off. I took a little 175 mile ride with some friends. Working great now....................

Good stuff.

I still would keep the battery tended for a bit. Also check the voltage with the battery at rest, meaning remove the charger for 24 hours then measure the voltage.

I wish I could get out for a ride

I'm glad you got it running again; I was out yesterday on the Duc. A beautiful sunny day for a ride.
