Lt Purchase

currently own a k1200rs. Thinking of a second bike with a little more touring capability. Looking at a 2001 lt with 80000 miles for about $6000. Is that a good price? Is the milage to high? What should I look for as far as problems? Last year I had to replace by clutch due to leaking seal on my current bike, hate to go through that again, it was a little pricey. thanks for the input.

80K miles isn't too much if the bike has been maintained according to service recommendations.
I think I recently saw a similar year bike with fewer miles and for less money in BWM Owner's News classifieds.

Re: Lt Purchase

Probably depends on what extras it may have on it. FWIW, I got my '01 with less miles and less money, and that was when the market was better.

Re: Lt Purchase

I purchased my 2000 LT in September for $7,500. It was a one owner, dealer maintained and had 20,000 miles on it.

Just for comparison, there is a 2002 K1200 LT-C listed today in the Seattle Craigs List for $8800. It has 44k on the clock.

Ron,
Give a look at a couple sites that offer a lot of bikes for sale like:
http://www.ibmwr.org/marketplace.shtml or http://www.cycletrader.com/find/
You may have a chance to get more ideas on price and miles ! I actually have been giving thought of adding an RS to my garage for a bit lighter toy for quick trips into town :<) Not that the LT does bad at that at all !! Good luck with your search.

Bill

Re: Lt Purchase

I bought a 2003 LT with only 16,000 miles for $8,000 a couple of months ago. My local dealer entered the VIN into the BMW system and was able to see that it had received all scheduled maintenance even though I was buying in from someone in another state. The bike had a few very small nicks and scratches from being dropped, but was otherwise in great condition.

If you get an LT, I strongly recommend you get something to secure the mirrors to the bike. I lost one when I hit a deep pothole riding early one morning before daylight. It's $600+ for a new one at a dealership. Fortunately I was able to find one through the BMWMOA forum for a lot less. I then bought Mirror Rescue cables from Bob's BMW for $16.95 for a pair. My mirrors are now secure. The problem is common enough that the new LTs come with retention straps already installed.

Re: Lt Purchase

Correction and apology - it was on this forum that I found my replacement mirror - not BMWMOA. I have, of course, gotten lots of other help on the other forum.
