Re: Looking To Buy My First BMW
Probably the most important thing to remember in the grand scheme of things is this: regardless of our emotional involvement with our motorcycles......they are simply machines, and they can be fixed.
On a less rational and objective note, I kind of understand the whole 'stopping and thinking before you buy' thing, especially if you are new to BMW's. I had been away from motorcycling for a little over a year before I bought my LT. Prior to that I had owned a little bit of everything, ZX-10, H-D Sportsters and Electra Glides, Gold Wings, a CBX, a Honda Turbo and a host of other interesting bikes. The only BMW I had owned before was a '91 Paris/Dakar which I truly loved, but my wife hated. We both still loved the feel and the 'quirks' that go along with BMW's, but she needed a real seat to sit on and a little comfort....which led us to the LT. Had it not been for my wife, I would have probably missed out on the whole LT Experience and would still be on a GS.
Long story short.....the LT is a great bike. I have had mine a little over a month and have put over 6K miles on it. Yes....it's quirky, top heavy and the motor makes weird sounds and yes it's not quite as sporty as a Ducati and it not as comfortable in a parking lot as a Wing.......but out on the road it comes into it's own. It's fast and comfortable and you get a sense of accomplishment when you DO finally scrape the pegs on an off ramp.
But by far....the best thing about the bike has been the people and the BMW community. This very forum has helped me through a number of familiarization issues and has helped put me at ease about my bike maintenance. I have always noticed that 'BMW People' tend to be quite intelligent, articulate and passionate about their bikes. Another rider on a BMW is never a stranger, they are a friend....even if you meet them two states away on your first shakedown ride while your bike is still wearing a paper plate.
The truth is, it's the people and the community that makes owning one of these great motorcycles such a great experience.
Buy an LT and open a whole new chapter in your life.
