Loose Rear Wheel Brake Disk

I'03 BMW K1200Lt - 've got a loose Rear Brake disk that has some rotational play in it. The dealer is telling me it should be replaced. The play is not excessive - maybe 1/18 of an inch. Do I really need to get it replaced?

Re: Loose Rear Wheel Brake Disk

Hello GDRDoc

That sounds like too much play , time to replace .Brakes are no place to squeak ,pun intended . I am running an EBC rotor had to add one additional wheel shim/spacer other than that no problem . Ordered from http://cyclebrakes.com about half price of BMW part ,but you have to reuse old antilock en coder wheel .

Re: Loose Rear Wheel Brake Disk

It is a floating disk, so should have some side to side play, but NEVER much rotational play. I assume you have 1/8" movement at the outside perimeter of the disk, not at the rivet pins. That is still too much. That much play can cause pretty severe shearing forces on the pins which over time can cause real problems. The sharp hits can cause the riveted fit of the pins to loosen, and worst case shear off. If it was me I would replace it.

I posted the same rotor issue a few days ago. I have an 05 and being from vancouver canada we only ride the bike for 6 months a year. We have 60,000 km (40,000 mi) these are all long distance kms, virtually no short hops. I now have the rotor off the bike and can't believe what a poor design this rotor is. Our rotor feels brand new, no scoring at all, but when riding it sounds like its oval. Does anyone think BMW will replace it even though the warranty is up? The dealer we bought it from won't even go to bat for us. What is the next step I should take!

Thanks,
Bill

Re: Loose Rear Wheel Brake Disk

It's not loose, It's "Floating".

Get an EBC rotor....Don't give BMW the satisfaction of re-buying their bad design..

BillCav... BMW will not replace your "wear" item out of warranty...

I doubt they would replace it in warranty as they'd blame it on your riding style...
