Sound System on but no CD or radio sound

I was wondering if anyone's come across a problem with the K1200LT (2003 model) sound system. The "On" button turns on and off the sound system lights, but no music from radio, single CD and 6 CD stacker are coming out. It was working at 6pm yesterday and then at 8am this morning, no music. None of the buttons work except the "On" (off) button. Now when I turn the bike on, it doesn't say "BMW" in the screen, it's just blank with the back light when on and totally dark when off. I thought it was a fuse, but the "On/Off" button seems to be sending power to the unit . The only thing that I've also noticed is that I can't eject the CD from the single CD player (which was what was playing when the bike was turned off yesterday). However if the CD was jammed (or malfunctioning), then I would have thought that the radio would work when I press the FM button.

Please help. It's no fun at all without music!

Sounds like a controller lock up. You need to force a hard re-boot of the radio controller by disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes. That should do the trick. Also wipes out the Motronic memory so it helps to reset the Throttle Position Sensor input. Key on no start, roll throttle open and closed three times then ride as normal.

Re: Sound System on but no CD or radio sound

Thanks for the tip. I'm a bit embarassed asking this, but I'm not mechanically inclined at all- do I disconnect the battery by lifting up the seat or do I need to get under the fairing? If it's under the seat, is there anything I need to know when disconnecting and re-connecting the battery (eg connect +ve before -ve or vice versa and/or make sure the engine is turned off, etc).

Also I didn't understand why I needed to pull the throttle 3 times with the engine off (happy to do it, but intrigued to understand why I'm doing it).

Finally why did this condition happen and how do I prevent it from happening again?

Re: Sound System on but no CD or radio sound

Yes lift the seat and disconnect the NEGATIVE battery terminal (has black or brown wires on it). If you don't feel comfortable doing the battery disconnect often just pulling the radio fuse will do the same thing. Fuse F8, 15 amp. But that one only goes to the radio controller not the main unit. If that does not work you must disconnect the battery since the main unit's fuse is on the back of the radio requiring tupperware removal.

The radio is controlled by a computer and we all know how those lock up from time to time don't we? Well this forces a hard re-boot of the software in the radio.

The Engine control system memorizes how you drive the vehicle and the Throttle position full and closed values are also stored. Disconneting the battery will erase these memories. It is not absoultly necessary to do the TPS reset but it gets the Engine control unit (The Motronic) back up to speed much quicker.

Thanks John, I'll give it a go tomorrow when there's more light. Really appreaciate you taking the time to provide the advice and explain stuff to a mechanically-challenged one such as I.

Cheers,

Re: Sound System on but no CD or radio sound

Had this happen to mine a year ago. Had to disconnect the battery and reconnect to reset the radio. Happened again shortly after again. Turns out I needed a new battery. Voltage would drop too low. Replaced battery and hasn't happened again.

How old is your battery?

Re: Sound System on but no CD or radio sound

John...Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you (I cannot say Thank You enough). I disconnected the battery (negative brown and black wires) for 30 mins. When I went to reconnect the negative wire, there were sparks that happened when I touched the wire to the negative battery lead (hopefully I haven't done anything back to the battery. Anyway, I turned it on and rolled the throtlle fully and closed 3 times and then turned on the the radio. I must admit the "BMW" words didn't come on immediately and my heart sank a bit...... and the the magic "BMW" words can on and then the MUSIC..... I love riding again!!!! It really was NO FUN riding without music (I really don't know how these non-LT/RT riders do it without music). Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.... I could go on and on.

Carl, the battery's original 2003 with the bike. Now that you mention it's a battery problem, I do remember leaving it on parking lights some days back for about 6 hrs I think. The bike started pretty much straight away, so I didn't think much of it, but that might have been what pushed the radio 'over the edge'.

Thanks again. This forum is the BEST! Be blessed!

Re: Sound System on but no CD or radio sound

As it happens, the sound from the rear speakers have cut off. I tried disconnecting the battery again and initially the rear speakers came back on (so that ruled out an issue with the electrical connection/ wires) but then went off. I disconnected the battery again several times since and most of the time the rear speakers do not come on, but sometimes they do but only for a minute and then there's no music from them. Is this just a battery issue and I need to get a new battery put in?

Has anyone ever had something like this happen to them?

It's definately not as fun riding without full surround sound.

LT rear speakers come on initially and then cuts out

Has any one had trouble with their K1200LT (I've got a 2003 model) rear speakers? The saga started when one day the radio wouldn't come one. I unplugged the battery for about 20mins and then it all came on. However shortly after (about 20 secs) the rear speakers cut out. When I unplugged the battery again, the rear speakers came back on (front speakers are working fine), but again after about 10 secs they cut out.

I took the bike to the local bike mechanic who only specialises in BMW bikes and he tried recharging the battery and swapping in a new battery and he too experiencd the rear speakers coming on for about 10 secs when he reconnected a battery and then the rear speakers cut out- showing it's definately NOT a connection/ wiring issue.

His suggestion was to take it to the BMW dealers becaus the entire radio unit might be faulty and might need to be replaced - $ound$ expen$ive

Anyone have any thoughts about what else I can do/ try? Such a dilema, I just can't enjoy the ride as much without surround sound music when the musics only coming from the front speakers.

Please help.... even if it's a one liner to say "before you take it to the dealer, try this...."

Thanks in advance
Joseph

Re: Sound System on but no CD or radio sound

I know it's an old thread now, but I have the same problem with my speakers going silent after a few seconds. At first it was just the fronts, now it's the front and 1 rear. Did you find a fix or an alternative?

Re: Sound System on but no CD or radio sound

If you have already ruled out the barrel connectors being loose or corroded then the the only other cause is back amp chips. That involves replacing the main board. Many have gone to replacing the entire radio with a Jensen marine grade unit for far less than a stock radio replacement.
