This is just a guess on my part, but if there is a retaining ring included, maybe they changed the later boxer engines to use one to help retain the sight glass. Boxer engines have always had a problem blowing the sight glasses out, thus the warning when installing them on the boxers was to do it dry, with no lubrication.
The reason is that on the boxer engines both pistons move out together, then back in together, producing compression pulses in the crankcase, which can over time cause the sight glass to be blown out.
This is not a problem on the "brick" engines (as in the LT), as there are only very minor pressure variations in the crankcase, so the new sight glass can be oiled before putting it back in to make it easier. They never blow out of the bricks.
