rusted front brake caliper pins

Did the search, turned up empty. Has anyone had the issue of a frozen (rusted) caliper pin? I'm talking about the pin the retains the brake pads. Liquid wrench did not help and now the screwdriver slot is shot (on the first one). Before you ask, yes, I pulled the retaining clip. Next step will be cutting the slot deeper with a dremel and heat but I'd like to hear any other experiences before I start.
Thanks in advance for your help
Mac

Re: rusted front brake caliper pins

If it's the pin I think you're talking about, I'd get a set of vice grips on it before trying to cut it.

I'm thinking of the two long pins that screw the caliper on to the fork. Is this the one that's giving you a hard time?

Re: rusted front brake caliper pins

If I'm thinking of the right thing....I'm not sure what the screwdriver slots are for. The pin in not threaded into the caliper. I had a bit of trouble with mine too (due to corrosion) an ended up driving them out with punch and hammer. It was tricky since I had to remove the caliper from the mountings to gain access to the back side. But that did the trick for me.

Re: rusted front brake caliper pins

Try levering/moving the pads. I presume this is an 99-2000 bike and the pads have a anti rattle spring that may have rusted to the pin. I have gotten stuck pins out this way.

Re: rusted front brake caliper pins

Thanks Dave. I just assumed that the pin was threaded due to the screwdriver slot. The manual isn't very clear on the removal. I already have the caliper off. I did tap the pin from the back side but not with a lot of force for fear of damaging the threads. I'll give it a try tonight and let everyone know.
thanks everyone

Re: rusted front brake caliper pins

The slot is there to help break the rust that is holding the pin hostage by rotating it. If it won't rotate you will just have to be persistant with penetrating oil and some percussive maintenance.
