Question Engine oil level

Any issue with filling oil to the top (or slightly above) of the sight glass.
When I change the oil & filter, I put in the stated amount (3.8 qts) and
it is always at the top of the sight glass.

Been doing this since my '85 K100RT, then my '00 R1100TR and now
my '03LT with no issues.

Anyone disagree?

I do the same thing Dave...no problems at all after 186K miles.

Re: Engine oil level

Ditto - As long as I can't see the level I know there is oil in there. Once in a while I put her on the center stand while she is running and watch the glass when I shut her down to see the oil level rise up - just to make sure the glass is clear.

Re: Engine oil level

is the level just after you've filled it up?

or after you filled it up and have run the engine?

Oil will be held in the filter, but it has to get there first

Re: Engine oil level

I usually pre-fill the filter since it goes in vertical. I do the same on my wifes Town & Country.

Re: Engine oil level

As long as the level is somewhere between top and bottom of the sight window, I just go riding.

Re: Engine oil level

I pre-fill the filter.
After the engine runs for a bit and then settles back down,
the oil level is at the top.
