Spiegler vs. Galfer Brake Lines

I'm going to replace my rubber brake lines while the LT is down for the re-rebuild of my ABS control unit. I had figured on using Spiegler. Looks like they have fixed the problems they had with the tee fitting on the front. Checked their website for a dealer. Cycle Gear was listed. Cycle Gear's website says they are a Galfer dealer. Lines come with banjo bolts and washers. I can't get pricing. They were closed by the time I called. Does anyone have any experience with Galfer to pass along? A search for "Galfer brake line" didn't net but one thread. It didn't address the brake lines.

All I can address is Spiegler.... Love them; a huge improvement over OEM for longevity and performance. The problem with the T-junction was solved. I ordered mine on line from Spiegler directly. www.spieglerusa.com .

Lee I have installed 4 set of Spiegler lines and would say they are the best. You can get them from Spiegler. i pulled this info from a post from a few years ago so the price may be different but the part # & phone # are still good

It was less then $250.00 with shipping to my door
I called them @ 937-291-1735 ordered kit #S-BM0140 for 99 & up LT for $234.95 they shipped the same day & received it in 3 days

Thanks, Brian and Steve. I had looked at Spiegler's website Sunday. I didn't see an online order form. The site did say if you couldn't find a local dealer or get the desired parts, call the phone number and they would help you. Something complicated as brake lines, I much prefer working with the manufacturer. Less chance of something getting messed up, or he said, she said. I'll go back and look at Spiegler's site again for online ordering.

Lee, I ordered my spieglers directly from the company, placed the order on Monday, was putting them on the bike by Friday, you give them the info about your bike and color you want and they are on the way in a couple of days.

Found out today, I have to go with Spiegler's, as Galfer does not have a kit for the LT. You can send the lines to them or measure everything and they can custom make them, but that sounds a little too much like work.

Spiegler doesn't include the banjo bolts, so should I order them at the same time or reuse the ones on the LT? What about the copper(?) washers? Are they reusable? I didn't see them on Spiegler's website at all. If replacement is necessary, do I have to get them from the dealer? Would any shop have washers to fit?

Sorry for all the questions. Usually, when I tackle something of this magnitude, I end up running all over trying to get all of the parts and fittings AFTER I've started the job. Sure would be nice to have everything together at the start, for once.

The kit comes with NEW washers. I had 1 or 2 extra ones with every kit. Just clean and reuse your old banjo bolts. They don't go bad just be careful not to cross thread them on reinstall.

Ok now the other opinion.

I'm sure Galfer and Speigler are fine products if you want to pay three prices for your stuff that's fine.

Take the old hoses off and take them down to the local hydraulic line repair place.
They'll make you all new ones just like the expensive ones at a fraction of the price.

I like your idea John: A good friend of mine owns a hydraulic repair shop in town here. I have built all of his classic car engines for years for no charge. He always want's to do something for me. I know he will do it for free if he can. Good idea. Thanks John.

Steve, I forgot to post this earlier; this is something that will save your bacon when you remove the right footrest/rear brake pedal to replace that brake line. You must get this aligned as it was OEM, or you will not get that sucker put back together.

When I installed my Spieglers, someone had said to make sure you got it right when putting it back together. I actually LISTENED to that little voice that said "Take a picture, that way tou can't screw it up!".

I have attached the picture for your reference; this was the "before" shot for rear brake pedal - and it did come in handy! You have to get the hoses aligned (intertwined) just like this! This is the right footrest/pedal assembly removed, and then turned around, showing the rear master cylinder, and brake line..

Do they make stainless lines? Didn't really explore that option. I'd rather have something I know was put together for a motorcycle. I didn't really like the idea of taking them off prior to having new ones ready to install. Too much time lapse = too much time to forget "where and how it went".

Brian, thanks for the info and the pic. I ordered the Spieger lines this morning, direct from Spiegler. Cycle Gear had them for the same price. The rep didn't mention an upcharge for colors, as the rep a Spieger did. Cycle Gear would have shipped FFA, but had to have the lines shipped to their facility in CA or KY, then shipped to me. No telling how long that would have taken. Spiegler might have shipped today. If so, I'll have them Friday.

Since my lines aren't shipping until tomorrow , it'll be next weekend before I'm able to do the install. I called Spiegler to ask if the lines had shipped today and was told they had a large order come in, so mine got pushed off to the side. No matter really. If they had shipped today, I wouldn't have gotten them until Monday. You just know they've already billed my credit card! PHOOEY!

Brake Line Update

I received the brake lines from Spiegler on Tuesday. Started with the install Friday night and just finished the install a few minutes ago. I started with the rear line at the union to the caliper. The angles of the fittings were off, but I made it work by angling the line toward the rear tire, instead of up. Upon reading the instructions, I found out what the plastic blocks and cylinder are for. You use a vice on the blocks and turn the banjo fitting with the cylinder. Since I can't bleed the system until the ABS unit comes back, I may remove the rear line and try to adjust the fittings. The install was relatively easy. I took my time to make sure the correct line went where it was supposed to. Being braided SS, the lines don't flex like rubber, so threading the fittings can be tricky.

I'm happy with the fit and finish of the lines and fittings, with the exception of the front brake connection to the reservior. The OEM lines had a short fitting with a sharp bend. I compared the Spiegler line and thought they looked the same. They did, until you try to get the grip put back where it's always been. There's a line on the clamp and a dot on the handlebar under the combination switch. The line on the clamp, lines up with the dot. After the brake line change, the line on the clamp would only line up about 1/8" away from the dot or below it. I opted for below it. The upper handlebar cover wouldn't fit due to the banjo fitting being too high. Strip everything back off and move the clamp 1/8" away from the dot. The handlebar covers fit, but there's a big gap at the switch housing.

Anyone else with Spiegler's have this problem?

Just thought I would post even though this is an old thread. Most go with the Spiegler but the Galfer lines were nearly $100 less. Below is a picture of the Galfer kit for my K1200LT. Comparing them to pics of the Spieglers they look to be very similar. I'll post how the install went once I get them installed.

Update: Installation of the all the front brake lines worked great, but I am not one that typically enjoys this kind of thing but since the front and back are not integrated I didn't see the need to do the back at this point. The line going to the front caliper is a bit long as you can see from the pic, but it still works great, no leaks. Galfer includes the banjo bolts but, I didn't use them, mainly because they wouldn't fit very well, but that's not a big deal.

If you notice the grub screw is still on... I managed to bleed the brakes with that on. First you bleed the left side completely, this means if there is air, it's only going to be in the four inches of brake line before the two sides link up. What I did was first layer some plastic around the base to cover the caliper, then pack a layer of rags above that. Then I cut a cheap $1 funnel from Walmart , and placed it under the lip of the grub screw. Then you remove the top cap, and under there you can depress a pin. When this is depressed fluid comes out. This worked for me without having to remove this bolt.

Also they sell this $5 brake bleed kit from Harbor Freight called the 'One Man Brake Bleeder Kit'. That kit has hollow plastic pins that stick into the top of the bleed bolts -- using this kit I was able to bleed the ABS unit without taking any panels off the left side. Stick this into the top of the ABS bleed bolt, from the right side come in with a 11mm, crack it open, then slowly squeeze the front caliper... Making sure you don't run out of fluid and suck air into the system. Despite the name of the kit I enlisted my son's help to hold the pin so that it didn't pop off and create a mess.

You should do the back also. My rear line failed due to the sharp bend in the hose going to the caliper.

I'm a little late to this party, but I'll add my 2 cents.

The guys over at Adventure Rider hipped me to yet another source.

Bud Provin used to be a dealer tech that now runs his own shop -- The Nickwackett Garage. Bud is a perfectionist craftsman that fabricates his own Stainless lines and does great work at a fair price.

He recently got me out of a major jam by fabricating a custom line for a non-standard application as this story relates -- https://rollingphysicsproblem.wordpr...2/nein-focken/ .

I've also discussed having him make me a clutch line when the time finally comes to do my clutch and seals. I've discussed that with the usual suspects and they didn't have one available and were in no way interested.

I'll let everybody know how that turns out.
