Headlight: What's the flashlight bulb for?

I had an issue with the HID light I used to replace my low beam headlamp on my '01 LT recently. I have since sent it back for a free replacement and am running the old H7 for awhile longer.

However I noticed for the first time when the HID went out that there is a small "flashlight" sized bulb - in both physical size and brightness - right in the front of the headlight assembly. What in the heck is that for anyway? It doesn't project enough light to be even mildly usable, and I can't for the life of me figure out why it's there.

That will be your parking light
Turn your keys past the steering lock position and it should come on
Leave it like that all night and you will have a flat battery

It's a parking light.

Interesting, because it is also on when the headlamp is on.

Yes it is which makes it a great place to tap a relay from.

Cool Re: Headlight: What's the flashlight bulb for?

Don't forget in Europe the main headlight has a switch on the right handlebar. It is a courtesy to turn off the big headlight when in the city, to not glare other vehicles. Therfore the small parking light suffices for the city. I first saw this on my 72 Norton. Thats why some guys put on a european switch assembly on the right handlebar for their driving or fog lights. Re: Headlight: What's the flashlight bulb for?

When my headlight burned out that small bulb with the reflection of the housing allowed my light to be lite for on coming traffic until I got home in the early evening. I feel it can act as a safety light.

Re: Headlight: What's the flashlight bulb for?

Resurrecting an older thread -

FYI

Today I accidentally left the parking light ( don't know what it is for in the US) on and in 4 hours needed to jump start the bike to get it to turn over! Hard to believe it could draw that much power. Thinking I'll remove the bulb to keep it from happening again. Wonder where the electricity will end up that leaks out of the empty socket?

That bulb and the two taillight bulbs -- a total of, if memory serves, 24W -- or roughly 2 Amps of constant load over the 4 hours. By itself, probably not enough to kill the battery, but probably enough to have the starter circuit preclude actuating the starter (a feature added to the LT at one point due to all the starter relays that welded themselves shut when trying to start with low battery voltage). All the more likely if the battery wasn't at peak voltage to start with.

Re: Headlight: What's the flashlight bulb for?

Thanks Mark,

I didn't realize that the back lights ( in my case all three wired together because of an early forum suggestion) came on in addition to the little one up front. Battery was putting out between 12.3 and 13.5 on the early morning ride, so my guess is that it was at full charge.

There was voltage when I turned the key, but not enough to get the bike to turn over. I didn't check to see exactly how many volts at the time. I guess I was too pissed to care at that point. Had to get to lunch...... and then back to class. Riding for the next 35-40 minutes was enough to get it charged up. Three hours later, after my class it fired up.
