Clutch/Slave Master Cylinder ???

I've been having trouble with sticky shifting.

I checked the linkage & replaced bad bushings & lube. Good stuff, but no difference.

I then bled & flushed the clutch using a speedbleeder & the Sayegh videos for reference. For the first 25 miles of my test ride, all was well. Then in some stop & go riding, it started to stick again. When it would stick, double-clutching seemed to help most of the time. So it seems to me, I probably have a hydraulic clutch problem.

If so, the trick here is isolating this (master vs slave). My clutch lever seems to make a noise when I pull it -- sounds like a soft clicking, sort of like a bellows compressing & expanding. I don't know if this is normal...

Anyway, any ideas? I wonder if the master cylinder needs a rebuild/replacing? I also could change the trans lube - its only got about 10k on it.

Re: Clutch/Slave Master Cylinder ???

My '03 clutch lever makes no noise, click or otherwise. That may be your culprit.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Due to heart health, the Dr says not to ride under 40 degree air temp. Ugh! Now it is harder to get my 18000 miles a year in just in the summer. Guess that stopped my 20 degree rides now.

Re: Clutch/Slave Master Cylinder ???

There is a rebuild kit fot the clutch master cylinder. Can't remeber the part #. Check the adjustments for free play, in the clutch lever. BMW calls for 1/4 turn beyond no play.
Any slipping when accelerating in3rd gear?

Sp,
That's news to me. I didn't think there was any adjustment on the lever other than for hand/finger size!

Re: Clutch/Slave Master Cylinder ???

I've had no slipping at all - and I'm grateful for that!

The noise the thing makes when pulling the clutch is definately not the faint little click you hear as when you pull the brake lever & hear the brake light switch click. This is a soft click, almost a breathing sound.

I just re-bled it (speed bleeder and a one man brake bleeder hose) and saw lots of super small bubbles for a while. I kinda suspected this would happen. Got them all out so I can see if I have the same experience again on a road test, as I did earlier today.

If I need to work the master cylinder, I'll compare the rebuild kit cost vs the new unit price to see if the juice is worth the squeeze. Anyone have experience & knowledge of costs here?
