Question The strangest thing appeared on my tire

I'm baffled. Is this a rear-drive failure warning? This shiney rub area appeared on my tire this afternoon after a 30 mile jaunt. With the bike on the center stand, there is no rubbing or drag on the tire that I can see or feel. The area being rubbed appears to be the forward part of the drive shaft tube. Also, there doesn't seem to be any wobble or side to side movement of the wheel.

Depending on whether you have performed a canistorectomy or not, it may be the breather tube that hangs down and clips onto the inside right side of the rear fender. If you remove the license plate plastic cover the breather tube should be visible on the inside right rear fender. Good luck.

Could also be the start of a tire failure. Is it an isolated area or all the way around?

swingarm?

Have you checked to see if it is rubbing on the inside of the swingarm? If you are running a low tire pressure and the tire distorts due to corning, or weight, it could possibly be rubbing the swingarm. That's a pretty pronounced tire mark from the picture you posted. Seems like an obvious place to look, as the mark is on the right side of the tire same as the swingarm

The tread pattern looks like a Dunlop, am I right? IIRC there was an issue where the Dunlop tires would rub against the swingarm making a mark like that. There's a spacer that fits between the hub and the wheel that alleviates the problem.

Some more info...
1. The rub is all around the tire, but a short distance of it does look like lighter contact.
2. I does appear to rubbing on the swing arm
3. The rub is only on the tread area and not the sidewall.
4. The tire is Donlop @50 psi
5. 10,000 miles since Aug '05 - 43,000 total
6. The wheel hasn't been off in the last 10,000 miles
7. Problem just appeared yesterday

Did you feel for play in the rear wheel? Contact at 3 and 9 o'clock and apply opposing force, rotate wheel 30 degrees and recheck. Does the wheel rotate freely on center stand? As David said insufficient spacing could be the problem but the tire has 10k on it. Keep us posted

No wobble or play in the wheel. It's not rubbing the side - only tread area.

This is a known problem with the Dunlops. They're supposed to be mounted with a shim to keep it away from the swingarm. I had this happen before the problem (and fix) was known and the dealer replaced my tire thinking it was a defective tire. The replacement also had the problem. I switched to Bridgestones.

If this is a known problem, why did it wait 10,000 miles before becoming evident?
Or, is that a common happening too?

That's a good question, and I don't have the answer. Mine started doing that after about 1000 miles, not right after it was mounted. I'm sure some others here know better than I.

The tire has 10,000 miles on it

A tire with 10,000 miles on it does not have the same structural integrity as a new tire. It could be flexing more, the internal components have weakened. All I know for a fact is I would rather replace a tire than damage the swingarm. Just be glad that it was not bad enough to cause a blow out, left you out on the road and really put a damper on your fun. Ask anyone who has had a blow out on a motorcycle! I would just change the tire for piece of mind and not look back.

Update: Color me astounded!
After 5 days of scratching my head, wracking my brain, trying to figure what had changed to cause the rub, I finally recalled that I had checked the air pressures before my ride. I bumped the pressure UP from 48 to 50psi. So, this morning I dropped it back to 48psi, and s.o.b.....the rub is gone. While I had my tire off, and I've had it off several times in the last few days, I sprayed the rubbed area with a little paint. After a good afternoon of riding, the paint is still in place...no more rub.
I would have never expected 2psi to make a difference.

Thumbs up The strangest thing appeared on my tire

Not long ago I too put on a set of Dunlop tires. I found the same rubbing on the rear tire. As mentioned before, buy another spacer and remove the rear wheel and place it along with the other one. Your problem will be solved!

It doesn't sound like much, but wouldn't more spacers kinda throw the wheel alignment off just a tad?
