Best route advice.....

I have almost two months of vacation this fall, and my wife and I want to ride from home, Orlando, FL, to Southwest Harbor, ME, then to Denver, CO, then Austin, TX, then home.
Can I get some 2cents on the best roads (or favorite roads) , and must sees for that trip? We have plenty of time, and are not against going out of the way to see some beautiful sights.....

If you are going to up by Denver, go a little farther north and take "The Road to the Sun". This road cuts through Glacier National Park in Montana. This Road is a MUST DO for every rider in my book.

Have a great vacation!

Re: Best route advice.....

In PA, make sure you go through Wellsboro, PA, the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania"

then head up through NY State Catskills region through Albany and up to VT and NH on the way to Maine. Stay off of I-95 as much as you can.

Re: Best route advice.....

I would suggest getting on the Blue Ridge Pky. near Stone Mountain State Park, NC. then going north. you can get off near Staunton Va. and see the natural bridge, this was surveyed by George Washington, then back on the Pky. then onto the Skyline dr. get off on US. 33 W through Harrisonburg Va. to W.V.there are a lot of things to see in the area( get a motorcycle tour map from Pocohontas cty. WV.) then stay near Marlinton WV. you Can proceed north on US 219 this will take you through MD into Pa.If you take US219 to Somerset,Pa. then go E on Pa.31you can stop and see the Shanksville Memorial. after exiting the Memorial turn right this will get you on US 30 E to US 220 N to US 6 this is where you can get to the grand canyon of pa. which is near wellsboro, Pa.

Re: Best route advice.....

Since you are going to be so close to Bar Harbor Ma. I would highly recommend going there its a cool little town and also riding through Arcadia National Park and going to the top of Cadillac mountain inside the park, there are lots of great views and plenty of spots to pull over and take pics.
Also right before you cross the bridge coming onto the island heading to Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor (same island) at Trenton there is a roadside restaurant that has a great lobster or lobsta dinners at a good price, its called the Trenton bridge lobster pound with big pots boiling in the front, mmmmmmm good eats!!!

Re: Best route advice.....

One of the suggestions included the Blue Ridge Pky. If you're in that area you're in the Apalachee mountains.....N Georgia, TN, NC etc. It would be a shame to miss The Dragon and Cherahala Pky. Google "the Dragon / Motorcycle" and it will show you everything in the area.

I'll second that since I was born in Wellsboro and still live only 25 miles away. While you are passing through, stop at the Wellsboro diner right on the corner of main street and Queen street.

Re: Best route advice.....

Thanks for all the great tips!
I am starting to get excited about the ride.... My wife's first long ride. I will keep you posted, and post pics. I agree with the "stay off I-95"!!!

Re: Best route advice.....

For nostalgia, try as many sections of Rt 66 as possible. Take a look at this web site for outstanding places: http://www.motorcycleroads.com/index.htm

I want to die young...at a ripe old age.

Several Triumphs (which I still love)
one Beezer 441
Harley Sportster (which I still hate and was ecstatic to see go)
2003 LT- traded for 2005
2005 LT- traded for deer (dead after the introduction to the LT- both totaled)
2005 LT- sold for a 2008 Gold Wing GL1800
2008 GL1800 Gold Wing
