New Poll; How many times has it dropped?

Gang,
I was reading a post on LT stats about color, year and age.
The thread morphed in to how many times everyone dropped the beast.
It seemed like a poll was needed.
If there was a dropped bike poll in the past, ...................as Hawkeye Pierce once said, "forgive me, I'm a draftee"!

Re: New Poll; How many times has it dropped?

Once, within the first 3 months of ownership, and... with the pillion on board. It was a slow motion fall to the left side at a Stop sign with the front wheel straight ahead but the road was strongly slanted to the left. Both the pillion and I dismounted as the bike was s.l.o.w.l.y passing the point where I could hold it. I guess my left leg was just too short.
This was my 99 Canyon Red LT.
Never dropped the 03 nor the 05 LTs.

Twice.

One time not moving, with Gretchen on the back.

One time I was sliding north on rt 14 while I was in the left lane and the bike was in the right lane.

Your poll is flawed. It does not allow for the full range of possible outcomes. You need a "0" alternative.

Like I said, "I'm a draftee". (or a rookie, whatever you prefer)
Of course the post asks "How Many" not "If".
I don't believe I can edit the poll.
If I could I would add the alternative "0" just because.

In a few places in this forum there is a saying, paraphrased of course.
"There are two kinds of LT riders, those that have dropped theirs and those that will".

So Matt, I'll take that as a "0" for you.

Yeah, maybe a zero option... but you need a "lots more than that" option too.
I have dropped the LT countless times.
First time: First week of ownership in the Walmart parking lot with lots of interested onlookers.
2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. times:
with my wife on board, making U-turn on narrow gravel road after a wrong turn,
with my wife on board after gassing up,
with no one on the bike, bike on centerstand on gravel driveway with my arm wedged up under the plastic trying to unplug the airbox temp sensor,
other times I can't recall the details of,
at the start of the ride of the BBDs when the bike started to go over and I decided "what the heck, don't fight it, this will be a crowd pleaser.",
at the end of the day of the BBD ride when it just seemed like the right thing to do in order to continue to please the crowd,
other times I can't recall the details of,
and more other times I can't recall the details of.

What's the big deal about dropping the LT anyway? Let it down slowly, gratefully accept help picking it up when help is available.

If you're not dropping it, you're not riding it.

Re: New Poll; How many times has it dropped?

The poll does need a "Zero" however, few if any will choose this since it will fall into the "jinxed it now" category.

Also, there are one or two members around who have dropped it, and in the process of picking it up went past vertical - lost it - and dropped her in the opposite direction!!

You'll need a "2fer1" option as well

"0" for me... But did get pretty darn close once, when I forgot to per her in gear, on the slightest down-slope. Started rolling, side stand went up, and she was going down, but I caught her. My arm should be healed soon, but I made the save!

Gave the man a check...got on the bike .....took it off the center stand in a sloped driveway and slowly it went over.

One week later, I thought the sidestand was fully deployed and it wasn't! Found that it needed lubed and the bike should have been in gear.

Learned alot in that first week!

Zero is a perfectly acceptable anwer to how many.

Yes, I have yet to drop my LT. I do though have only 10,000 miles on it so there is plenty of time left.

Yes, I have heard the "two types of LT riders" phrase that is most likely a take-off on the aviation saying "There are two types of pilots; those who have landed gear-up and those who will." That statement is as false as the LT version.

I have flown for 30 years and never landed gear-up. I know many retired pilot friends who ended their career without a gear incident. I suspect there are a number of LT "pilots" who have yet to drop their LT, but your poll won't capture that.

Hey, it is your poll though...

I took the "don't want to go there" option as similar to "countless", but countless does have a nice ring to it!

I would change you last statement though to say "If you're dropping it, then you are not riding it!"

Re: New Poll; How many times has it dropped?

...I would think you would get a more accurate count if the results were anonymous. I personally dropped the bike once being stupid. I went down to a creek from the road but couldn't make it back---it was too rocky and it was on incline. Jerking and bucking with baseball or larger size rocks I finally got the front tire on the road when the rear just took off in the wrong direction and down she went. Was I ever so mad!! I was mad because of my stupidity! The LT is not a scrambler.

When I checked for damages it wasn't as bad as I thought but I felt more pain from being stupid.

It's the journey, not the destination.

Re: New Poll; How many times has it dropped?

Yep done it a bunch in all kinds of stupid ways.

Grass has got me more then once with front wheel turned and clamping the front brake too hard. No damage there except pride.

Only 1 really bad expensive one, right turn, upward hard right incline from a stop. Took a bag skin, chrome strip, and complete mirror.

Less then 1 thousand miles on the bike at that time. Did I mention that was very costly?

Just when I think me and her are in step, she starts "The Electric LT Slide" and sends me scrambling.

She keeps me honest in that respect though. I am much more aware and in tune with the bike and conditions.

Absolutely. I think the following quote applies if you replace "aviation" with "LT."

"Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous, but to a degree even greater than the sea is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity, or neglect."

o yea, she has been dropped more than once, in fact two weeks ago when turning into business driveway a customer decided not stop trying to get out and of course we know how good the LT's turn under 5mph. Lucky I just let her fall on her side and spoke under my breath, then picked her back up.

Re: New Poll; How many times has it dropped?

I would say it's safe to say that these people have also dropped it at least once

AlaskaFish, Axle, barzini, bemmerbiker, Bloodhound, bmwusmc, c00k1e, cfell, cuffer101, gbowman, itspossible, LAF, little_jake, ltcommuter, mickrichardson, Moonshine, pozo_izquierdo, RVB1019, Sereman

I would think a place for zero would be good to have in this poll. That would give an estimate on the % of droppers

Only twice so far - both at less than walking pace, on gravel. Once with my wife on the back. No harm done except a little gravel marking on pannier chrome strip.

3 or 4 times previously but not in several years....

It has been a very very long time since I've dropped the big fat pig ( I don't believe in fate!) and my best guess is that I'm better at balance and I pay closer attention at slow movements. I've said this in the past, but I'll repeat it. In the 30+ years that I have been riding a variety of bikes, this is the first that I have ever dropped while not above 5 MPH!

Re: New Poll; How many times has it dropped?

Again, I can't vote. I've done it 4 or 5 times.

Color blue, year 2000. Purchased as salvage. So it tends to have somekind of charasteristics to fall down.

I purchased my LT as salvage. Nothing critical. Actually just broken tupperware when fallen down.

I repaired it and I did my first test ride when snow was on the ground. LT's tires actually were not real M+S tires, so after 50 meters (100 yards) LT was laying on its left side on the road. By 10 mph nothing happened, but I needed help to get it up.

After winter, first working day when I went to company with my bike, I left it parked nose down. Parking place was descending slightly and side stand did not keep her in planned place (no gear in). Again help was needed.

Once in garage I got her on left side. Cannot remember why.

And once at summer cottage I stopped. Tried to turn her in descending road, 0.5 mph . And I found out when she decided to go down that it is impossible to say no to her. As much as I wanted to say no!

maybe I shouldsell her before something worse happens.

Parked my (then) new 2005 K1200LT in our garage next to my son's new Subaru. While the garage door was coming down, heard a "CRASH"---------------! Yep - it rolled off the stand. Fortunately the car fender (and my billfold) took all the hit. I learned from that.

Same thing for me but I t was at a Wallmart and there was one of those anti theft devices laying in my path after I turned into the spot with and the pin sticking up and I paniced when I saw it and grabbed the from brake and we took a brief rest on our right side.

Was at the DMV when renewing tags
Parked it on a slight down hill slope left it in neutral when I parked it. When I came out she was taking a nap on the left side. Now my chrome trim on the side cases and engine guards match.
I do not park in neutral anymore.

Once in 86,000 miles. Acouple of years ago I stepped in a hole backing out of a parking space, on grass and in front of a bunch of very amused friends.

Would have chosen 0 (zero) if it had been a choice.

I wish I could think of clever things to say in my signature.

I did drop it twice within the SAME DAY! one each side and after 5 months of ownership and 26 years of riding without dropping any bike. My pride took a bit hit that day :-) I learnt since to respect the fat German girl.

Twice. 0 MPH. Both when stopped(ing) on crowned road. Not a defect with the LT; Leg apparently not long enough on low side. when it goes...it goes.

Hmmm. Sorry Howard, that one is going to count. Had you been prepared with either soft pillows or sand for the ol' girl to nap on, then we could have let it slide.

Same same heah............twice with the lovely pillion..........no harm, no fowl.........both at real slow speed and both on gravel.........once solo across the mud flats with many amused on lookers.............some times the fact that the bike is such a good looking piece of hardware can be a distinct disadvantage...........................

Re: New Poll; How many times has it dropped?

Bought my 06 last Aug, and touch wood, havn't dropped it yet. I can see how easily that can happen. This bike handles so differently than any other bike I've owned. The parking lot slow speed manouvers are the most critical ones where I can see it happen. Spring time is the time when caution is the keyword as all the sand and gravel on the roads can be a major contributor to the drop scenario. Once they sweep the roads, I feel a lot easier and it puts the enjoyment back into riding. I am not in a hurry to join the dropped it club.
My previous ride was never dropped ( 89 Venture ) however I forgot to put it in gear while it was parked on a slight incline, and about 30 sec. after I walked away from the bike, I heard a big crash. Yup, it rolled forward just enough to move the kickstand up and over she went. I hate when that happens!

Can't wait to ride again!!!!!
Jim!

Oh, by the way I've dropped mine once in the short time I've had it....I wasn't moving.

That was the same beach...just a few miles North. It was just outside Galveston and we were looking at the damage from Hurricane Ike and the road was gone. Not closed, not messed up, GONE. We had to detour about 12 miles on the beach. It only took us a bit over an hour to go through it.
Next time, I'll try the dune buggy!

From my above post: "if you're not dropping it, you're not riding it."

Sure if you live in the paved flatlands and never leave the ashpalt you can score "zero" on the survey.

But, if you really ride it, explore, some things are bound to happen, like low speed tipovers.

Heck, I take my LT places that hundreds of GS' have never been, gravel, mud, U-turns on single lane dirt roads with no shoulder. The LT is the most underrated dual-sport in the BMW line-up.

Never tried to ride a beach with it though; you get 10 out of 10 valuable style points!

3 times "So Far" .... and each instance has been OFF the pavement either on a dirt shoulder or in a dirt camping area while maneuvering the trailer into a camp site.

I don't know how many times, but more than 3. The most recent was last weekend. I parked her on the side of the road to put the mirrors back on that popped off when I hit a pothole going about 70 on the super slab. I don't worry about it -- I just pick her up when she falls.

Re: New Poll; How many times has it dropped?

There are some of us that have not dropped their LT. I had both a 2006 and currently a 2005 and have NOT dropped the bike. I have come close and had a high pucker factor on several occasions; but my tip over wings are like new. So, I did not check the box because the survey starts with one drop---bad idea to presume 100% of LT owners have dumped their bikes over.
