LT = 1 Racoon = :(

My wife and I were out riding this afternoon on a beautiful 2 lane road in Kansas, about 45 MPH just minding our own business when a raccoon darted from the ditch at the bike. He was probably 20 feet ahead of us with teeth showing. What a rush! My attempts to avoid the critter failed. I told my wife to hold on thru the intercom and before she could react...THUMP...THUMP. Yep...both tires right over that sucker. Never having this kind of experience on a bike before I was pleasantly disappointed and really lucky. That LT didn't swerve, skid or burp. Just plowed right thru him. Looking back on it and the MSF training I had...I must admit...the lesson recalled was DO NOT PANIC.

One heck of a bike it is mate!

Re: LT = 1 Racoon = :(

Back around 89-90, I was riding to work on a CBR1000F Hurricane. I was running US 98 south early morning around 0200 at about 110-120mph.
A bunny darted into the road in front of me and I hit it hard.
The front tire flipped the bunny up onto my right foot...
The bunny hit my big toe so hard I thought I was going to cry.
When I got to work, I looked at my shoe and there were bunny teeth hanging out of the toe...

Glad you're OK, Shuster. Try a little WD-40 basting and make some racoon jerky. It's quite a delicacy. Don't rush the basting, however.

My MSF instructor said that if the animal was small enough to eat in one setting, its probably best to just run over it than to try and avoid it.

Re: LT = 1 Racoon = :(

call me unfeeling, but I never risk a twenty thousand dollar bike on a two cent critter. I'll slow down and brace myself but not even brake hard or take a chance on losing control. I get squirrells all the time. They are suicidal in my area and I'm oblidged to see as many of the little tree rats succeed as possible . One less to chew on my house trim. As for coons, man you got to stop after and get the tail for sure.

Dogs I will brake for if they are large enough to damage something and cats are something I'll try braking for but swerving is not an option for me . Roads up here in the hills of georgia are hard enough to stay on without adding to the problem. LOL

Possums are not a problem on my bike because I never ride at night when its raining.

Deer. Don't even think about it. Deer around here will actually run into YOU . You don't even have to run into them. Deer collisions is my greates fear on a bike. I almost never hear of a good outcome on those so I just try to stay off backroads at night and even that's no guarantee

No matter where you go , there you are.

Re: LT = 1 Racoon = :(

I had a black cat dart out in front of me years ago on my Sporty. No room to swerve (parked cars) so I hit the brakes hard, then THUMP, THUMP!

It was actually the best feeling in the world!!! I thought for sure that the small Sportster wouldn't pull through; especially two up!

We pulled over and got off, and went back to look at the animal (SO was a cat lover). I actually felt bad for the little creature, he wasn't dead, just writhing in pain. Just then a truck came and put it out of it's misery.

The way I look at that incident is that bad luck tried to get me, but I kicked it's a$$!!!

I ran over a small dog back in the 70's. I was riding one handed, holding on to a bag of groceries on my lap. Thump thump. Honda 750's were very stable.

Re: LT = 1 Racoon = :(

Several years ago my wife was reading a book on the back of an old Suzuki while we were on a trip. A racoon ran out, missed my front wheel and I hit it square with the rear. I didn't have time to react because I barely saw it before we hit it. I told my wife I couldn't believe that didn't throw us down and she said, "what didn't throw us down". I had to take her back and show her because she didn't believe we could hit something without her even feeling it.

A few weeks ago I was riding at night and ran right up on a crane standing in the middle of my lane. It jumped and missed my head by a couple of inches. I felt lucky it didn't crap all over me. Almost crapped myself though.

Re: LT = 1 Racoon = :(

1 deer and 1 racoon here. It was a small deer maybe 60 lbs or so. It's head hit my right mirror, killed the deer and took my mirror off. I turned around to drag the dead deer off the road. About a year or so later on the same road about a few miles from where I hit the deer I hit a coon but this time I just kept going.

Spinedr, it had nothing to do with your horn....no, see they knew right off you were a Yankee and were just saying hello.

Now you could have done us all a favor and taken a few of them out on your way through, cause some times their origin determining skills are not as good as they should be.

Re: LT = 1 Racoon = :(

A couple of years ago had a suicidal large (western South Dakota) jack rabbit jump just before the front tire would have hit him. Took him in the left radiator, busted out the high beam, broke most of the low beam attach points, bent radiator and busted other plastic parts was $1,800 to repair. Hit him doing about 70. Even a small creature can do a lot of damage if it hits wrong.

Re: LT = 1 Racoon = :(

you make a good point. I was working on the flight line back in the sixties when an RF 101 came in under emergency landing with a flame out in the left engine. I went up to the intake and there was a stork of somekinds beak penetrating the CAST ALUMINUM intake shroud. the beak was intact and the eighth inch aluminum was penetrated as if butter. That blew my mind and I realized now ballistics can do strage things. I quit chasing buzzards with my old volvo on interstates after that day.

I asked the pilot what the hell he was doing at the time and he informed me he was doing some solo runs at low altitude at .915 MACH. Dang man that's asking for it .

No matter where you go , there you are.

Re: LT = 1 Racoon = :(

Back in the 70's on my first BMW, an R60/5, I was touring Michigan's UP. While riding through Eagle Harbor the road made two 90 degree turns. Coming out of the second one, a right hander, I noticed a Collie running at me from the porch of a house along the road. I was, of course, leaned over quite a bit and couldn't get on the throttle. Just as I did, the dog tried to cross in front of me. The front tire struck him broadside, throwing him up in the air over top of me. I saw him land on his back in my mirror. My first thought was that I had just hit the Mayor's dog and immediately cranked on the throttle to "get out of Dodge" as fast as I could. Looking back on it, it's amazing that it didn't upset the bike one bit, it was as if I had just hit a small bump in the road. I wasn't an experienced rider at the time and had no training previously, but must have known what to do by instinct. The incident made a very enjoyable trip even that much more memorable.
