Me thinks me screwed up

I pulled the intake cam to swap two buckets and then could not get the sprocket back on. I think I may have turned the crankshaft when I turned the exhaust cam to try to get slack in the chain for the intake sprocket.

The pistons are not equally deep from the head, so I guess that means I turned the crank?

At this point, do I need to pull the timing cover off and time it all from the crank?

Re: Me thinks me screwed up

Put the bottom sprocket on the bottom cam. Take your wrench and turn the bottom cam upwards. This will give you enough slack to put the top sprocket on. You may have to turn the top cam to align the key to the top sprocket. (I've done 14 valve adjustments)

Thanks, that worked great.

In reading the manual, and assuming I started with the pistons in the correct position being midway through their stroke (my interpretation of the manual ), they are not all midway through their stroke at this point.

How can I be sure I have not gotten the cams out of time with the crank without removing the timing cover to check.

Is this an "interference engine"?

As long as you haven't jumped any teeth you're fine..
Just rotate the intake camshaft to match the sprocket..Bolt her up..
If you rotated the lower camshaft upwards then you haven't screwed up..
you can fer sure turn the motor from there.

Stop panic...Breath deeply...

Finish bike..

Ride bike.

Good Luck

Re: Me thinks me screwed up

What he said. I always measure the valve gap after adjustment and before I put the bike back together. Murphy and all that.

Re: Me thinks me screwed up

Got her back together but the swap did not work. I've got one intake at .05 so I guess I'll have to get a micrometer and order a new bucket!

Fun learning experience though!!

If the chain was Ty-wrapped to the sprockets, you will not have the engine out of time. The chain cannot come off the crank sprocket due to the close clearance, so that is not an issue.

The only thing I have seen a couple of times is that someone thought the sprocket was on correctly when it was not over the timing pin yet, and when they tightened the sprocket bolts they sheared part of the pin and broached out the sprocket hole. That will throw the timing off a little bit.
