'05 Radio Aux Input

Just returned the LT ranks this weekend with a lightly used 2005. I'm looking for a way to input my MP3 into the stereo system. My 2000 LT had a cassette so the adapter was a no-brainer. Since this one has a CD in dash, I've lost that option. I did notice that the stereo selector pages through an auxiliary or accessory port. I've looked through the "Halls of Wisdom" and searched the threads but may not be using the proper search terms. Help please...

Thanks

Mark

Does your new LT have the Voice II system?

Re: '05 Radio Aux Input

A 3.5 mm connector with 2 male ends connects easily from the MP3 player to the Comm system's auxiliary input. It does not charge while playing nor does the player get controlled through the system (other than volume). Not elegant or "the final solution" but it works great from me. I call it the $6 solution (for the price of the cable).

Re: '05 Radio Aux Input

No comm system on the bike. I ordered the AUX input based on a 2002 525i radio per the first response to this thread by Turbocat. Looks like the best solution IMO but will involve removing the radio which I've done on my 2000 LT. No big deal. I'll be wiring my power cord for my Nuvi at that time as well which is also the source for my MP3.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: '05 Radio Aux Input

Update...

Installed but ran into the same low output/input issue using this connection. I bought a cheap amp off eBay and cut it down to fit under the stingray. You'll need some basic electrical wiring skills to make the connections and to power the unit. I used a relay powered to the first detent on the ignition switch, same as the radio, so it can be on at the same time.

The amp I used is this one (see attached)

No way its 180 watts though...more like 10 watts per channel. Price is right and it fits nicely under the stingray above the radio.

Hey Man,

I also just bought an 05 LT and had the same question, half a day of intense research and I came up with two solutions but you need the 6 disc CD changer (or at least the harness) and trade from an MP3 to an IPOD. I found Dice Electronics courtesy of another inmate (thats what we call us on Adventure Rider), and a set-up from mp3yourcar.com (which I purchased).

Since our bikes have the same control and changer as the BMW 3 series sedan and the MINI Cooper so there are some plug and play solutions...If you have the IPOD, supposedly (sp) once installed you will have all of the functionality to search (and text, to a limited degree) and control the IPOD. I had a Sandisc MP3 player but I purchased a Nano for this, I should have all of the bits in three days and if you can wait that long I will provide a detailed report. If in the meantime your research finds a solution like this for non IPOD applications please let me know.

Re: '05 Radio Aux Input

Thanks, I think though I will eventually add an amp to replace using the HU power (as the right rear speaker is out) and swap the cd changer for my zune. Will be later this year though as I am moving and won't have the equipment or time.

Re: '05 Radio Aux Input

There is an aux input on the face of the radio in the oddments box. Buy a STEREO 1/8 cable with two male ends and plug one end into the AUX input and the other into a Boosteroo mini-amp that costs about $20.00. You will need this to boost the sound out of the iPod. Plug the Boosteroo cable into the Aux input of the Voice II and the music volume can be controlled by the handlebar control. You won't be able to change tunes by the handlebar control or see whats playing on the LCD display with this setup but if all you want is music while riding you don't have to tear the bike apart either. Some people have wired a twelve volt plug into the oddments box so the iPod will charge while riding.

Hope this helps,

> Prime Power, If you don't have a VoiceII you will need to buy the mentioned part that 5150 put in his post or get an Aux input device (like a BlitzSafe for example) that takes the place of your CD changer.

Re: '05 Radio Aux Input

I don't know what I have. I just bought the bike two weeks ago. I know it says aux and something else when I scroll through the menu. I would go look but it is pouring here and I rode it to work. I believe it might have it, but don't know.

Why don't you take a photo of whatever is in your oddments box and post it? A VoiceII is a communication system.

Re: '05 Radio Aux Input

Got some time between the rain and it does say intercom after aux. However in the oddments box I only see the cd player. Where at in there is the aux input?

Re: '05 Radio Aux Input

Unless you have the factory installed intercom there is no obvious AUX input. The cable mentioned above plugs into a port on the rear of the radio - the same port the factory intercom uses.

I believe I do have the factory installed intercom as it is an option when I scroll through the menu. Just can't find the port for it.

If you do then the AUX port, Phone & GMRS inputs are to the right & above the CD slot.

Re: '05 Radio Aux Input

You can get the AUX to show up on the sceen with out having the factory intercom. If you do have the Voice II there will be an LED readout and big knob just above the CD slot.
