Laptop connection on the LT ??

This summer, Karen and I are heading out for 3 months on the road doing the iron Butte National Parks Tour....
She picked up a new laptop for the trip and......the question is:
If it's in the topcase, how have Y'all been running the wires to charge it while riding ?......or ?
Thanx for any

Re: Laptop connection on the LT ??

Hello Allan

I had installed a cigar lighter in the top case to charge a cell phone . 12 V +- wires are up inside the light , they are always "HOT" not switched by the ignition key .

Well firstly you will need a 12v to 19v inverter. I have yet to see a 12v laptop, although I am sure they must exist.

Secondly, taks a feed from the wiring to the top box power socket and bring it inside like this...

Re: Laptop connection on the LT ??

Took my laptop on my Alaska trip from Florida. 12060 miles in the top case. At night I would just plug it in the charger in the hotel room.

Hello Ajlelectronics ;
That is a handy looking surface mount receptacle , is it made by Lucas ?
Do you know of a vendor on this side of the Pond ?

I plug a small inverter into the power socket, and the laptop (cell phone, or ipod, etc.) charger into the inverter.

Re: Laptop connection on the LT ??

Well...nom you guys have me scratching my head.
The laptop comes with a charger to plug it into an automobile 12V cigar lighter.
Are you saying that this is no good and I also need an inverter ?

Re: Laptop connection on the LT ??

I'm sure there are many ways to do this,
I cut out a corner of the plastic under the mirror,
used a split rubber hose for the gasket,
the switch and the power jack came from an auto parts store.

Well that suggests that you already have an inverter. All you need to do is provide a suitable connection. The socket I sell is the same type as the other ones on the bike so will need to be adapted to take your plug,

Re: Laptop connection on the LT ??

An DC--AC inverter is good if your laptop does not come with a 12 volt charger and you don't wanna spend the bling for one. An inverter from Costco is a great and cheap alternative.

Just make sure your bike is running if using/charging your laptop. Don't ask me how I know this!

Re: Laptop connection on the LT ??

Nice looking install Hans..............
I did have some concern about a surface mounted jack with all the stuff we seem to pack into the top box, but this install seems very workable.
Again, thanx to all for the ideas.
