Question Oil leak ?

So yesterday while cleaning my 02 lt I noticed some oil on the tranny not on the ground

I run redline tranny fluid but this looks like engine oil

43,000 miles Is this the sign of a rear main seal gone bad ?

Or just road sludge.....

Re: Oil leak ?

Not necessarily a rear main seal. I've got a couple of spots leaking right now. One on the valve cover and one on the water and oil pump cover. Valve cover is an easy fix, the water and oil pump cover is going to be a bear.

Re: Oil leak ?

Hello TrackAdaptor

My 99 transmission has had a small leak somewhere up around the starter , I changed to non synthetic lube and now it has almost completely stopped ,does not drip enough to make it to the ground . I think the PO got an repair estimate and decided to lower the asking price and dump it cheep.

Re: Oil leak ?

After seeing posts and pix here about drilling a drainage hole in the bell housing, I dropped the crash pan, drilled a small hole, and verified my oil leak is from the trany seal.

The only way I was able to get under the LT to drill the hole was to use a cordless drill and cut a drill bit down so that only about an inch of the bit protruded from the chuck.

To cut the bit, I but it in the drill, drill into a vice, put the drill into reverse and put the hack saw to it. I made a notch into the bit, and broke it off--easy.

Re: Oil leak ?

Mine was coming from the breather hoses on top of the engine... not dripping to the floor.

Re: Oil leak ?

I scanned the LT section on "breather hose" and found this for you:
