Final drive failure = dirty rear wheel?

Hi all,
has anyone noticed when there final drive was starting to fail if the rim seemed to collect more black grime? I faintly remember a post about this (Meesy13 & his GT?) and am just looking fir a little help. I have a friends LT in my garage with broken shift linkage and he commented on how he thought his rear brake was dragging since the rim was getting so dirty. Bike rolls freely in neutral so brakes are not dragging very much.

I can't feel any side play or roughness when turning the wheel. Will try listening with my stethoscope since I have two identical bikes to compare.

On a side note: When the seal started to weep on my 85K the first indication was the rim got dirty. Note: This weepage was when the bike was 22 years old and the bearing is still original. I didn't even open the drive just replaced the seal.

Re: Final drive failure = dirty rear wheel?

Hi Roy,

No, I hadn't noticed a dirtier rear wheel. But I did notice a sensation that the back brake was rubbing. Also heard a rough, cyclical grinding sound, as if the brakes were rubbing. It obviously wasn't the brakes. I believe that's the first symptom of the bearing starting to disintegrate, is a grinding sound getting louder and louder over a couple hundred miles. Now it makes sense to me as to what it was. Dealer never believed me until they get the opportunity to repair it.
