Starting Smoke

Looking at a 2001 K1200LT with 56K miles. Is there significance if there is white smoke on startup after sitting a couple weeks on it's side stand. Smoke goes away after a few minutes of running. It has no problem in starting.

Re: Starting Smoke

Never mind. I should have performed a search first. Seems this is common for K-bikes set on their side stands immediately after shutting down.

Re: Starting Smoke

The K12LT's do that if left on the side stand. When on the side stand oil runs toward the cylinders and seeps around causing the smoke. If left on the center stand or not put on the side stand until about 30 seconds after shutting it down, it virtually eliminated this.

Just another "feature" of the k12

Re: Starting Smoke

Oh no. You have serious problem. To avoid it, drain all engine oil out from your motor. Then it won't smoke anymore

To be more serious:
Smoke is not an option. You get it free of charge when you purchase LT. It is shame that BMW copied that feature from Goldwing. They shouldn't.

You can avoid it (or at least there will be much less smoke when starting) by using center stand instead of sidestand.

It is an undocumented 'feature', pre-oiling pistons.

But unlike Honda, BMW correctly pre-oils ALL cylinders, not just half of them!

Re: Starting Smoke

I am unable to use the center stand. I prop up the side stand just enough, and have not had a smoke issue since the first week we got our LT...at which point it smoked so bad the first few times I started it, I thought the motor was shot. Didn't smoke when we first looked at it, or during the test ride.

Imagine the shock to find myself in a cloud of billowing smoke from a newly purchased, pre-owned BMW!

I have noticed some oil consumption when I am running in the 7K rpm range however!
