Help me identify this please-2002 KLTE

Gentlemen, excuse my ignorance. This is a plug that comes out from the dash-light area in parallel to the power for the factory GPS on my 02 LTE. I had the instrument cover off during my recent HID install, and found that the wire I am trying to ID traces to a big loop of wires ending in a further unidentified unit (looks like a "turtle").

I think this must relate to an unkown (to me) radar detector unit?

Also, does anyone have any good reasons to update from the factory Street Pilot III unit? It is my first experience with GPS and I like it fine, but new units are so inexpensive these days...

Thanks

Re: Help me identify this please-2002 KLTE

Not really sure what that loop of cable is for...could be intercom or an audio out from the SPIII. Ask the previous owner?

Speaking of the SPIII, ITS OLDand SLOW!! The newer units, 27xx, 28xx, and Zumo will all hold the entire US and Canada maps. And, come that way from the factory. The recalc time is so fast you won't believe it and some units offer XMRadio and audio file stoarge/playback.

Unlike your SPIII the 27xxs and 28xxs do not have an internal battery.
No big deal. The Zumo series do. Both the Streetpilots and Zumos are waterproof and good mounts are available for each.

Some of the models I reference are out of production but, still available.
I love my 2720.

I have not mentioned the 2600 series, because they will not accept the newest NT based mapsets. Although, the 2610 is likely the best model Garmin ever built. It has features they no longer offer on any models.

You need to do some research! Good Hunting!!

That "turtle" is your antenna for the SPIII.

Upgrading to a 26xx,27xx or 28xx GPS will allow you to get rid of that item.

I changed mine out to a 2730. Very satisfied with it. Refurbs on e-bay for $180 now.

+1 to what Dan says! And that coiled cable is the coax which Garmin provided in case you had a ways to go in positioning it.

Re: Help me identify this please-2002 KLTE

Looks just like the inside of my dash! I'll second the "it's slow." Recalculations are a waste of time. By the time it has recalculated my mistake, I'm past the required turn and then it starts all over again and again and again! Best to turn it off and start all over.... A real PITA and a safety hazard. I simply have the recalculate turned off by default I can initiate it when needed. Much safer... One of these days I'll upgrade...

Dan - Does the 2730 interface with the mounts and cables for the SP III ?

Nope. The SPIII has that round, keyed 4 pin plug, The 26xx, 27xx and 28xx units use a slide-in shoe type plug. The mounts (cradles) are different also.

Re: Help me identify this please-2002 KLTE

The mount and wiring needed are available on ebay for less than $40 shipped.

Search on garmin 2730 mount.

Very easy.

Re: Help me identify this please-2002 KLTE

I also have an 02 LTE. About the only thing I use the GPS for is to know the speed. Would like to know what it would take to install a Zumo. I have the mounting bracket figured out it is the wiring that I am unsure of. Can I use any of my current wiring ect.. Thanks for any help.

Re: Help me identify this please-2002 KLTE

I have an 03LTE with a Garmin. It says Navi GPS 2N on the box. I seldom turn it on because I've driven most of the roads I ride in Texas and most surrounding states. I envy those that can use this system to it's full potential........

Re: Help me identify this please-2002 KLTE

Please note that Garmin antenna's (turtle as you call it) is a much sought after antenna and usually out performs other antennas that look similar. If the GPS that it attached to is no longer available you might try to sell on eBay - great antenna in its day!! As others have said it most likely connects to an older GPS and if that unit is still available time to sell it or donate it ot others.
