Battery information

Hello once again. I am back with another question.,

I have a 2005 K1200LT, original owner was a demo for the dealer. I have the original battery and it is on a battery tender when not in use. I ride almost all year round. Have standard accessories and a GPS add on which has been on the bike for about 3 years, motolights, and a heated suit connection.

How long will the original battery last? I do not want to be away from home and have the battery fail. I have not had any problem so far but I also know that batteries do not last forever. I am guessing 5 years is a life of battery.

What is the best replacement battery for a 2005 K1200LT.

Thanks, did not see much help in the search or batter sections of this forum.

Re: Battery information

Hey there,
Haven't look in here for a while but ran across your post. As for me I replaced my dealer battery (which was the gel type) with a westco battery. I've had no problems with it, but I do carry my battery tender with me and if I think I'm going to leave it parked for more than two or three days I plug it in. Although I always plug it in at home and have had no problems. But then again I don't ride as much as you. Thats my limited experience with that.

My '02 came with a lead/acid battery and I was not impressed with the corrosion factor and quickly moved to a BMW gel. My first gel lasted 18 months and I attribute it to too many "deep cycles" by not keeping a battery tender on it. I have since had a tender on my bike every non-riding moment except on trips (feeling that daily riding of 300 miles and more keeps the charge up).

Other riders have had much success with the Odyssey brand. The price is much lower as I recall, but recharge and use of a battery tender is something David Sheeley might know more than I. IHTH

Ron spent some time collecting Bat info:

Out here the heat kills batts.

Unlike warming up a cold battery to get her juices flowing in the winter, we can't cool 'em down to revive them.

Same here, I put Odyssey's in all my bikes, no complaints.

Re: Battery information

2003 k1200lt/se, still on original battery, gel type, bike at 35000 miles, ran it flat a few times (radio on when cleaning, keep forgetting about the headlight), usually the bike stands for 4 weeks at a time, then gets 4 weeks use, touch wood its never been a problem, it has however had an easy life.
