Final Drive-Tango Uniform :(

I am another new member of the Final Drive Club. I was on my way to the Falling Leaf Rally in my home town, Potosi, MO. The drive died about a hundred miles out. I hauled the bike home like a Harley, in a trailer.

What year final drive will fit this bike, it is a 2001 LT. I need to retain the speedo connection. I have access to a 2005 drive, but I understand that it doesn't have a place for a speedo sensor. Is this true, and what will work?

I will probably rebuild the dead drive, but having a second drive would be nice.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Re: Final Drive-Tango Uniform :(

Only '99-'01 drives will work. The speed sensor was removed when the brakes changed in '02.

Older drives can be used on newer bikes (by leaving the speed sensor in place but not hooking it up) but the newer drives don't have the hole in the housing for the sensor.

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work...I want to achieve it through not dying.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just rebuild my drive this week.
I may pick up the parts at Destination Cycle tomorrow, I am in Knoxville about once a week, nice area you live in.

There is an excellent video done by Charlie VT on re-building the rear drive. He presented it at the CCR this past August. See http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/newreply...ote=1&p=342562

Unlike your BMW, my H-D has over 80K miles on it and has never been on a trailer.

Re: Final Drive-Tango Uniform :(

After 22 years of Naval Service I had to look up Tango Uniform. Don't ask me how I didn't know that one.
SNAFU, FUBAR huh? Okay, maybe not FUBAR.

Regarding rebuilding of final drives, there are three things of great importance in my opinion: Preload, preload, and preload.

I am not alone in my suspicions that the key to a long lasting final drive is stalling the crown wheel bearing with proper preload shims installed.

Rebuild that Tango Uniform FD and you'll get a Bravo Zulo from me.

Damn! Sorry to hear it. Sounds like you're taking it in good stride. Good on you rebuilding it. I may have some q's for you and others in a month. If all works out, I may have a final drive to rebuild and stash away in the garage for the possibility once the warranty is gone.
