Dead 2009 LT @ 229 miles.

Imagine the feeling when you are 60 miles from the house...in the country, and your 1 day old 2009 LT took a 4+ gasoline pee and some kind sole dumped a couple bags of kitty litter on the ground to soak it up. Sunday night...the dealer will open again on Tuesday. The local towing service that MTS sends had to stop at Walmart to get some straps to tie the bike off with. I don't know who to get angry with first...Any thoughts?

Everyone has a bad day but it is going to take a miracle to get me through this one!!!

Re: Dead 2009 LT @ 229 miles.

It is just a machine and stuff happens eventually to all of them, not just BMW's.

At least you are getting it out of the way early.

My 02 had a dead battery the first morning after bringing it home. Was thinking just as your are, but 61K later and still lov'in it.

They will fix it and then the fun begins.

Good Luck

Keep good records.
Make the dealer feel guilty as can be.
Ask for free stuff!
Hopefully, your file of records will be small.

Re: Dead 2009 LT @ 229 miles.

I beeeeeeeeeeee pissssssssssssssssed.

This weekend the wife and I went to the north Georgia mountains. We left Thursday, the last pitt stop, which we almost to the hotel, look and find fluid on the rear wheel, tire etc........

First thought was the final drive. Did the spin the tire, rotated back forth, all was good.

Anyway, traced it to the rear brake. So all weekend, no using the rear brake, when I did, stopped and wipe the wheel down.

Break down suck, but she is a 9 year old bike.

You guys are great! Thanks for all the encouragement. It is one heck of a machine and I do see better days on the horizon. I have never piloted a ship of this size...it looks bigger than it feels and my wife is very happy with the creature comforts.

Is it reasonable that I ask the dealer to go pick this thing up?

Absolutely! The dealer maybe embarrassed, although the failure is most unlikely to be their fault. Stuff happens!

I think I figured it out. I parked this thing in a lot with about 25-30 Harleys and left it there for about 3 hours. I think those Harleys scared my BMW so bad it pee'ed all over it's Tupperware.

What brand of Kitty Litter did they use to soak it up?

Did you buy it from Engle? If so, they should pick it up with no questions asked. Sorry to hear of your disappointment.

Re: Dead 2009 LT @ 229 miles.

As soon as I figure out how to share some pictures I will. I called BMW Roadside Assistance this morning and they were GREAT! So ABC Towing out of Kansas City came and took it away. They will take it to Engle motors tomorrow. Will let you know how Engle handles the situation. I hope they take care of me. I wonder what it would have been like if I was riding that thing and the leaking fuel ignited?

It could be worse: there is a guy on this site who wrecked (totaled?) his GS about 1/4 mile from the dealership... right after signing the paperwork and paying for it. Breakdowns - especially on something shiny-new - can be a PITA, but you're still intact!

I feel your pain!
I had my LT at the dealer shop for 30 days! It only had 700 miles on it!

It all ended well though.

Ron..
Hey.. the "plastic" Quick Disconnects "QD" are used on the fuel tank so they can remove it without emptying the tank.

Either one of them were not fully "seated" or it cracked under the Fuel Pump pressure... Either way, not a "happy day"...

If possible, "negotiate" with them to "upgrade" you to the "METAL QD's"... it will cost them less than another tow and possible flaming slag pool.

Re: Dead 2009 LT @ 229 miles.

Just got off the phone with the guys at Engle. I wished they would have called me before I called them for an update. The report at this time is to replace the fuel tank which seems to have distortion where the flange that holds the fuel pump mounting plate attaches. BMW is going to overnight the parts and perhaps will have it on the road again in two days (this Thursday). Sounds like their are doing the right thing for me at this time. Will keep you posted...

On another note:The BMW Roadside Assistance Plan that came with the bike was a good experience.

I am now trying to figure out the remote for the bike security system. I am having a bit of a problem with the two levels of "secret codes" that come with the remote. I am not sure if this type of system came on the 08 machines? It almost seems like a three hour training class is necessary...perhaps I am just having a senior moment...Anyone got this figured our with an easy explanation?

That would make me pretty unhappy. Be interesting to see what the dealer says. I too have had dealings with Engles and they have always been fair -- not cheap, but fair.

Re: Dead 2009 LT @ 229 miles.

Greetings to all: Took a ride over to Engle Motors today and had a good visit. Everyone was very kind. I was the victim and seems like Engle was in that class as well. I did speak with the BMW Consumer Warranty team out east and this is the first report of a faulty tank in the 09 LT line. I do hope they are telling the truth because I would not wish this on even a Harley owner. While I was at Engle I took a few pix and thought I would share naked pictures of my bike with the world.
Also learned that if you have a BMW under warranty and you are stranded and are more than 100 miles form your home...they will take care of you, up to $500 or three days for cost of living. Perhaps when I get the bike back my sweetie and I will take off like a bat out of KC to the 101 mile marker and if something happens we can turn it into a 3 day vacation. (just kidding...)
$500 can buy a lot of buttermilk!

Re: Dead 2009 LT @ 229 miles.

Ron,

The same thing happened to me as well. The bike went to the dealer twice due to gas leaks, soon after purchase in 2005.

When it happened again they decided to change the entire tank and fuel pump etc, obviously at no cost to myself.

This solved the problem.

Sorry that this happened but glad they stepped up to the plate. At least it was close to the house and not on some big trip.
The bike does look kinda weird with the clothes off. I usually see a thick layer of dust and dirt when my bike is necked.

Got a call from Engle Motors today while I was out and they said my motorcycle was ready to come home. Anyone want to put some wagers on the table...did they clean it all up or will I get it back dirty or with more dirt than when it went in? Sure would be sweet if it was clean.

Yup - agree. I'd be takin' 'em some KKs, or a *$$ gift card. If Jon Bush is still there, he'll make a dent in the box of KKs!!!

I'm confused. It has to come back dirtier than it went in. Can't get any cleaner than those pictures show.

Re: Dead 2009 LT @ 229 miles.

My fuel line quick connect cut loose in McPherson on my first long ride. I stripped mine out on the highway shoulder and substituted a 5/16 barb fitting and two hose clamps for the quick connect. Total down time was about 1 1/2 hours but I figure fixing your K1200 almost 200 miles from home on a Saturday afternoon is a pretty good day all things considered. Also the plastic male quick connects have been replaced by metal ones so it's a problem you shouldn't have to deal with.

Re: Dead 2009 LT @ 229 miles.

Got the bike back today and all was fine. They did clean it up. These guys really took care of me. The extras I ordered on Saturday, comm system, Nav III and Tank bag were there and installed. These guys even installed the new BMW metal fuel line disconnects for me. They filled the tank back up with fuel and wished me a safe ride where ever I was headed. I only had a chance to put another 129 miles on it this evening, my sweetie got a little chilly. I gotta take my hat off to Bob Kohlscheen (Master Certified Technician) A REAL GENTLEMAN...The kind of fellow that makes you want to rush home and bake an apple pie for. I think we are lucky to have him in Kansas City. Thank You Engle Motors!!!!
