Parts Availabilty

I apologize if I have missed a similar post before, but after almost two years of researching, reading, and learning (most of it inside this site, which I very much appreciate) I am close to buying my first BMW bike. I really want an LT, but my biggest concern is with the flux the LT is currently in with a new model coming out. My question is......what is the anticipated ability to get parts for an older version LT, if the new LT is so different as is projected? What has me worried is the apparent attempt to use up all of their existing inventory on the 2009 LT, and the CCR info. that it is a possibility they could skip a year. I know rumors are worth nothing, but does anyone have an opinion on future availability of parts after the new model comes out. My other option will be to go with an RT instead.

Re: Parts Availabilty

There are enough parts available. The only thing in short supply in the US is early 99-00 rear drives (at the dealers anyway). Most everything else has been maintained over the years by BMW even long after the model was discontinued. The RT of today is not the RT of 5 years ago (well it is close but many changes).

2009 K1300GT Red Rocket
2009 R1200GS (Gone)
2005 K1200LT Ocean Blue Blue Wizard 110 K and counting...
2006 Bushtec Turbo+2 Spell
2004 330 Ci Convertable

Have ridden a Motorcycle in all 48
But lack DE, MA, RI and CT with the 2005 LT

Don't know where you get the 99-00 rear drives. They don't have any 08 rear drives. I know. I'm waiting for one.

Excuse me. 07.

Re: Parts Availabilty

I haven't had any problems getting what I need for my '99 LT. Plenty of new and used parts out there.

Re: Parts Availabilty

With the exception of the Final Drives (Shame on you BMW) parts availability for just about any BMW is very good. BMW especially has been good at keeping parts for very old motorcycles, so I hope they keep it up and have parts for the more current ones available for many years to come.

It has not been uncommon for people with quite old "R" bikes to need parts, go to the dealer, and often get them off the shelf. Try that with some other brands!

It is pretty unacceptable for BMW to not have final drives available, when this has been their Achilles heel for the past few years. Even the new GT is experiencing a very high rate of final drive failures! BMW is taking another beating (or a continuation of the old one) on the LD rider list due to recent high rate of failures on the GT, which has the "NEW IMPROVED" design final drive.

I am sure disappointed in BMW's final drive problems, and the fact that they still stonewall it.

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work...I want to achieve it through not dying.
