Dashboard illumination ... am I going crazy

The illumination for the dials keeps going out. When I start the bike it's OK but then after a while it goes out. I start the bike in my garage in the mornings and at the parking garage when I'm returning home. It's dark in both places .... I dont believe the LT has photosensitive lights ... so I'm guessing there must be a loose connection somewhere. Yes?

There is a photosensitive cell on the dash so effectively the illumination will stop once you are outside in daylight. Conversely your dash will be lit when riding at night or going through a tunnel or entering a covered parking structure.

Re: Dashboard illumination ... am I going crazy

Thanks for the reply. I've only had this bike for two weeks and I looked all through the documentation and couldn't see any mention of photosensitive but it all becomes clear now. It does go on and off if I'm in a tunnel ... I haven't riddent the bike when it's dark yet.

Unfortunately I booked it into the workshop for next week to find the fault before the photosensitive thing occurred to me.

I should call them and cancel. Migh even tell them why.

I am glad you asked the question. I was starting to wonder about that myself. Mine is a bit inconsistent, so I started to wonder too if I had an electrical problem. Cool.

I believe it is only the 2005 & newer models with the auto dim, my 2001 does not have the feature.

I have to call my dealer and cancel the appointment I made as well, I explained to them when they asked me what the problem was, you would imagine that the dealer would tell you that the dash is photosensitive.

I thought I had a problem also, After I read zippy's reply I was wondering if he was kidding

I'm learning something new everyday on my new bike.

Thanks

I didn't see the year of your bike listed, but my 2007 automatically turns on the instrument lights when it gets dark and turns them off when it gets light. Actually works pretty well!

Re: Dashboard illumination ... am I going crazy

Just rode my 2009 for the first time at sunset into darkness. Just after sunset the instrument light went on and off several times over a 5 minute period of time until it apparently got dark enough to stay on. I wasn't quite sure if I had a problem or if a sensor was hiding somewhere. It sure was nice to find the answer here! Where exactly is the sensor located, can't seem to be able to find?

It's behind the lens on the LHS of the dash - by the clock-setting button - that matches the alarm flasher on the right.

I can confirm that the brightness is adjustable on my '2007. It is done by pressing the "Trip Reset" button when you are displaying total mileage on the display screen. a "Dimm" scale appears on the bottom of the LCD screen. Each press of the button causes the level to become brighter by one level until it reaches max brightness when pressing the button begins to decrease the level. Note that total mileage must be displayed for this to work. If Mileage 1 or 2 is displayed pressing the Trip reset button resets that odometer function to zero as you would expect.
