Need help- ABS fault code

I have a 2001 with abs2. I also have bought the GS911 tool to check for faults. The code comes up with code 13 which is a plunger test fault. This has happened 4 times now( the flashing alternate abs lights) and now i have the reason. The question is now what to do to fix the problem. It is not in the Clymer repair book. HELP!!! Thanks

Re: Need help- ABS fault code

Try running some fresh DOT 4 brake fluid through the system, but don't hold your breath. When the ABS kicks in the motor runs and operats the plungers that modulate the brake pressure. Not sure if the flush has cured that one before but it worth a try as it takes less than a pint to flush front and rear.

Re: Need help- ABS fault code

I didn't know that the GS-911 could read ABS-2.

Can you confirm thats what you mean?

I have been troubleshooting ABS-2 the old fashioned way for too long and have been waiting for them to update the software.

They came out with a Beta release a while back that does the ABS II stuff now. It was on their bucket list of things to add, it just took a while.

You can always get updated SW right from their site:

Re: Need help- ABS fault code

The code 13 is the code from the GS911. I understand this is also fault code 16 on the BMW codes which is failed plunger test. From what it says on the GS911 is that the plunger is sticking every once in a while. Is there anyway to fix this problem or is it a replacement of the abs unit?

Re: Need help- ABS fault code

There was a guy on the i-bmw site that took one apart - don't know if he fixed it. Steve Rowe has the same issue and it returns immediately following a reset. We will try a flush and reset again in a few weeks after I get back from CCR and the California trip that starts tomorrow.

I tried doing my own brain surgery once - look what happened to me.

I don't know of any ABS units that are field serviceable. Lots of tricky tolerances in there, and besides, if there are no seal sets available for rebuild, your chances of a sucessful repair are slim and none.
When dealing with safety issues like brakes, why take the chance?
I agree, if the issue is an intermittently sticking plunger, the best course of action is a flush with fresh brake fluid.
