I'm fed up of my LT

I'm sick to the core of all this, I think I'll get a Goldwing or HD...

It takes me where I want to go, when I want to go.

It is comfortable, smooth and powerful.

It is safe and dependable.

I don't have to mess with chains and similar archaic drive trains.

It looks fantastic.

It has room for all my toys and farkles.

It does in excess of 50MPG at all times.

Hell, it's only let me down once, the fact it was my fault is neither here nor there, BMW should compensate me for my short sightedness when wiring the driving lamps directly instead of through a relay.

Just trying to redress the balance a bit.

Just pussin' through.

Re: I'm fed up of my LT

Let me tell you about what turned me on to BMW bikes.

About 25 years ago, maybe more, can't be sure.
My first bike was a Honda C90. That had two speeds. Wide open and stationary. I learned about riding from that. Came off it a few times being inexperienced and stupid. Then I got a Hona 250 Superdream. Used it to train on before passing my test. I was never that secure on it. Maybe it was the tyres or suspension but I felt I had always got to expect it to kill me. Yes I was probably still pushing my luck a bit.

When I passed my test, I went to the dealers and looked at the Goldwing. I was all set to buy one, until a friend of mine with a R100RS took me to the BMW local dealer. We looked at the R100RT and as there were two in stock, we bought one each. Driving it away from the dealers, everyone including me was convinced it was going to end in tears.

I drove around for a few days getting used to it and then one day, I went into a hard left hand bend far too fast, at least for the Superdream. I almost closed my eyes and prayed, but the bike just went round that curve like on rails. It only got better from there. I trained as a motorcycle instructor and sharpened up my riding skills. A few other BMWs followed, I especially liked the K1100LT, but boy was that expensive when it fell over. (My own fault AGAIN!) That was sold because I just didn't get the chance to use it enough.

After about three years, I went to Nice (France) and noticed everyone riding about on Piaggio X9s which I thought looked fantastic. That whetted my appetite and so purchased an X9 250. That was stupid. After a while I decided that I might just as well do it properly and purchased the K1200LT.

I dropped it first day out. A hard but impressive lesson. Mileage is now 27K and I have loved every moment, even the flat battery incident did not upset me much. It is the most impressive vehicle I have ever had the pleasure to pilot. That includes a Piper Seneca III.

Just pussin' through.

Re: I'm fed up of my LT

Not wanting to regress, I am considering a Cushman Eagle.

What kind of oil should I use in it?

What is the best exhaust?

Any recommendations for the tires?

What is the best seat? What are the best seat springs? Do you think naugahide or should I consider leather?

Tragically 'twas not my Piper. I merely had the hot seat under supervision for an hour coming home from Holland, before I got my PPL.

Just pussin' through.

The rear drive failures scare me too, but if you spend any time over at gl1800riders.com you will see similar stories of blown transmissions, loose swing arm bearings, wiring troubles, etc.. No machine is perfect.

Re: I'm fed up of my LT

I can understand what you are going thru. My 99 LT has cause me some problems as well. I have to put gas in the bike every 200-300 mile. I think I also will get a HD in order to make more stops. This LT makes my butt sore between fuelings. While my none BMW riding friends are taking a break and refueling, I just have to wait on them. I also have a problem of going the speed limit. At a fast idle, I find I am doing more the the law allows here in Mo.
I guess I am going to hang in there for awhile longer to see if things improve.
